In the episode "Irresistible", an extreme fetishist is mutilating corpses in a graveyard in Minnesota, taking the hair and fingernails of the dead women. Mulder and Scully are the agents that take the case when the FBI is called in and Mulder immediately realizes that it is the work of a deranged person and his behavior is going to escalate. His prediction comes true as the fetishist begins to kill women in order to obtain his fresh prizes.
Unfortunately, Scully is still suffering from the aftereffects of her abduction and finds herself unable to function effectively. When she returns to Washington, she understands that if she does not confront her fears, her status as an effective agent with be compromised. Scully returns to Minnesota, only to be captured by the fetishist and is in danger of being killed. Fortunately, Mulder is able to track the perpetrator down and Scully is rescued in the nick of time.
This episode is an excellent thriller, the villain is very strong and scary and the subject matter just gross enough to keep you interested but not enough to make you sick. The fetishist is visually quite ordinary, it is his mannerisms that set him aside as a freak.
The second episode "Die Hand Die Verletzt" involves satanic worship at a most unusual location, the school board of a small town high school and you recognize the power of the episode from the opening scene. A group of four adults are having a meeting discussing school board business when they conclude the meeting and then offer up a prayer. My initial reaction was something along the lines of dislike because of what I thought was the injection of Christian fundamentalism into a secular environment. However, that changed very quickly when their chants were from satanic worship.
This begins a scary, yet fascinating series of events where the devil worshipers are exposed as child abusers, as the stepdaughter of one member was used as the focus of the satanic rites. The tables are turned however, as it becomes clear that the devil incarnate is in town and actively working to exact revenge for worshipful noncompliance. People are being forced to take actions against their will and in an ironic end; it is the devil incarnate that rescues Scully and Mulder from certain death. Given that there is also a human-eating snake under the control of the devil, this is one of the best episodes of the X-files series.
