Why can't all Syfy series be as great as this one?

First, I love THE WIZARD OF OZ.  I can't watch it anymore, since I"ve seen it probably 100 times, but I did love it when I first saw it.  In fact, I loved it so much that I immediately sought out and read the book (remember books?  Neat things.)  Of course, the novel was much darker than the movie, but that was okay.  The kindergarten teacher witch was creepy enough to get to me as a kid, and to be honest, she still does.  Now, Syfy (actually, then it was Sci Fi) comes along and "updates" the story........and it WORKS.  Part of the greatness of this series is the wonderful writing.  Everything is well explained, but only at the proper time.  The story line is extremely well done and the characters are well fleshed out.  Another part of the greatness is the actors themselves.  All of the main characters were at least competent, and some of them (Alan Cumming, Kathleen Robertson and Neal McDonough) were nothing short of brilliant.  My only quibble (and it is a quibble rather than a real gripe) is that the ending seemed too quick and forced.  I have been wracking my brain for what else could have been done in the time alloted and I haven't come up with anything any better myself, but it just felt that the story ending was too rushed.

As for story line, it's very similar to the original, but really diffrerent in may ways as well.  It's obvious that this action takes place after (perhaps even long after) Dorothy's sojourn in Oz, but it ties in with the original well.  I highly recommend this as one thing that Syfy (or Sci Fi) has done right after so many films that they didn't do right.

By the way, I love the mobats.  Ugly critters!!!!!!

I do actually miss the SciFi Channel a bit. We got it with the second tier package back home but not up here. Every once in awhile there was something worth watching like an old movie or something. They showed NIGHT FEEDERS as one of their "SciFi Originals" even though they had nothing to do with its production whatsoever.

Once in a while, they do have something good. I am tired of Star Gate the whatever. Too many spinoffs for me. Still, like TIN MAN, occasionally they get it right

Good review; I saw most of this last year on SyFy (ha ha). Anyway, do you know if it's out on DVD?
