Reality Show Identity Crisis

This was a really strange episode. It started off a little interesting with the song "All I Have to Do Is Dream" by the Everly Brothers. Very quickly, though, it took a turn for the worse. Suddenly, there were clips from previous episodes, but the producers were trying too hard to be artsy and techy with the presentation of it all. There were fancy camera angles and weird transitions to different scenes, even the words that scrolled out were done with "style." The extra effects took away from the memories. I didn't like the high tech distortions or the electronic feel of it all. It was done to spruce up the introduction to the show, but it had the alternate effect on me. I almost turned off my television when I saw all that garbage.

American Idol is obviously going through a reality show identity crisis. They want to be something bigger and better than they really are. Reality shows are purely for entertainment. We try to find meaning in them, try not to feel as guilty for watching them, but in the end we shouldn't try to fool ourselves...and neither should the producers!

This show happened to air on St. Patrick's Day, so there was something about the "Luck of the Irish" going on, but I didn't really understand what. They played a little bit of Irish music before moving on. There was some discussion between Ryan and Simon about "crossing the line" with the whole face off from the last show. This part definitely looked fake because Simon wasn't serious enough. He was actually smiling when Ryan playfully got in his face again and "eyeballed" him some more. I really think the judges' antics are used as a way to bring more viewers to the show because otherwise it might be boring to just listen to the contestants sing.

After the playful banter between the judges and Ryan, Simon announced the "judge's save," which was first implemented last year. The judges can agree to save someone up until the top five contestants. However, it has to be an unanimous decision, which will be difficult to pull off with them!

As soon as Simon finished explaining the judge's save, David Cook came out and sang "Jumping Jack," a Rolling Stones song. I'm not a fan of the Rolling Stones, and Cook's performance bored me. I enjoy rock music, but I didn't enjoy his interpretation. After he was done singing, Cook talked about American Idol Gives Back. This year he will be going to Africa to help the people there.

The best part about the episode was the first American Idol Ford Commercial. This year Ford is pushing their Fiesta car, which I think is truly atrocious! It really isn't a "pretty car" unlike last year's Ford Fusion push. The contestants sang "Tick Tick Boom" and then Ryan showed the video clips where the American Idols created their customized Fiestas. I'm actually interested in winning one just because I enjoyed their designs so much. My three favorite cars were Crystal's, Mike's and Lacey's. I might have to check out the American Idol website for more details!

I'm not sure how the producers did it, but they really jam-packed the results' show. There was a lot going on before they even announced the bottom three. The final guest star was Ke$ha and 3Oh!3 with their performance of "Blah Blah Blah." This was a really bad song and performance. I couldn't help thinking that I was watching a drunk girl dance around on stage trying to look cool as she made a fool of herself. I understand that she's trying to be the next Lady Gaga, but she came off as a bad poser. I also didn't understand why she put on the Native American headdress toward the end of the song. I found her entire performance annoying, but that part was particularly insulting and disrespectful. Luckily, there was at least one performance I enjoyed.

The best performer of the night was Orianthi. I always wondered what the singer looked like because I hear "According to You" a lot on the radio. It always reminds me of Kelly Clarkson. This girl looks nothing like Kelly, though, and she talked with a cute accent, maybe Australian? Thankfully, she prevented the episode from being a total waste of time.

This episode was really disappointing from the weird intro to the confusion at the end of the show when the wrong family name was flashed for the idol who was leaving. In fact, they didn't even show that contestant's family! It all felt rushed with too much going on, which attributed to the name error at the end. I didn't like any of the performers or their songs except Orianthi, and I hear her song all the time on the radio. So, it wasn't much of a treat or reason to watch this episode. I was also extremely disappointed with America's final vote.

If you haven't watched this episode, I recommend skipping it. You can always find out who was sent home by searching the web (or looking in the Wiki facts to the right of this review). It will save you an extra hour of time for a more productive activity.

Maybe this could develop into a reality show crossover and Ryan and Simon could work out their differences in the "squared circle"-- They could have a Steel Cage Death Match on Wrestlemania!!
April 29, 2010
Not a bad idea, but I want more blood than that offers. Plus you have all the screaming, name calling, and taunting that's involved before wrestlers actually get down to fighting.
April 30, 2010
That wouldn't last too long either. Ryan's such an itty bitty little guy.
April 30, 2010
LOL! You both are so funny! What an interesting idea for a new reality show. I'm so behind in these reviews...I'm trying not to think about it for a while, lol. Too much other stuff to work on with my life first, lol.

Paula could be the referee.
April 30, 2010
The winners of the two matches could then take on each other!

@aerodaze: Too true! I don't see it as a chore, though. LOL! I see the other work as being "chorish." I miss my television show reviews, especially when they encourage this type of fun discussions! I needed a break from the serious topics, lol!

I agree with you about the judges and their antics. I saw a preview for this episode where Ryan and Simon are having the "staredown". It looked pretty fake, lol. I don't think Ryan would have the guts to get in Simon's face unless a part of it was already planned out. Also, I've never heard of this Ke$ha person before (hey, I'm getting old. Can't keep up with what the kids are listening to, lol. Also, a dollar sign instead of an "s". Wow, that's real creative (rolls eyes)), but you know she must be a really bad singer if her hit song is titled "Blah, Blah, Blah". That in and of itself makes me not want to hear her sing two notes, let alone a whole song. Her performance doesn't sound like it was too great either based on your description of it.

LOL!! I read your review comment, and I laughed so much! She reminded me of someone that Jasmine would like. So unoriginal with the name spelling and song title. :-P
April 01, 2010
Yes, Jasmine is probably a big fan of Ke$ha. That wouldn't surprise me one bit. She always had a thing for artists with zero talent, rofl!!!! :-)
April 06, 2010
LOL!! I couldn't agree more!!

March 29, 2010
Oh I SO agree with you about Ke$ha's performance and look. Must she be so OBVIOUS about wanting to be the next Lady Gaga with the star over her eye and all? And I was as confused as you about the Indian headdress. Good Grief.
March 30, 2010
I didn't even think to comment on the star, lol. She was the worst performer of the night. I wish I could have voted her home. :-P I had never heard her sing before, but it's pretty obvious I am not going to be a fan after that song.
