Dueling Pianists on American Idol Top 16 Result's Show

This was a jam-packed episode that began with clips from the week's performances. American Idol producers wanted to remind us of how important this decision was, especially to the contestants. There were many shots of them frustrated or in tears, such as Katie. Everyone understands that the contestants have a greater chance at making it "big" if they can make it to the top twelve.

After the recap, Ryan introduced the judges. The bikini challenge, issued on Wednesday night (ep. 20), was seriously downplayed, probably because the person Simon made this promise to was leaving the show tonight. They made an attempt at humor, though, by displaying Randy's head on "bikini boy's" body (someone who auditioned this year). I wonder if the producers would have encouraged Randy to dress up in a bikini if the person hadn't been voted out. It's difficult to say.

Next, there was a mini-preview for next week's show. Ryan Seacrest announced the theme: Rolling Stones. I've always had more fun with American Idol once we get to the themes, so I am eagerly anticipating the song selections of the top twelve singers.

As an opening act, the top 16 singers sang "Haven't Met You Yet" by Michael Bublé. The men sounded great, but the girls fell a little flat, even Crystal. This isn't her genre, and all the women felt weak next to their male counterparts.

After the song was over, Ryan went straight into the announcements of who was leaving the show. I wasn't surprised at these initial results. I had predicted that these two people would be sent home based on their final performance or lack of consistency since Hollywood week. The real surprises were being saved for later.

To keep the audience in suspense and heighten the drama, Ryan broke up the results show after revealing three female and three male singers who were in the top twelve. That's when the best part of the night occurred: the guest performers! Matt Giraud and Scott Macintyre (from season 8) would be performing "Tell Her about It" by Billy Joel. Originally, I was a fan of both singers, but as last year's competition progressed, I noticed that Scott Macintyre didn't have much of a singing range. It often felt like he was singing the same types of songs or going off key. Eventually, I began to suspect that America was voting for him merely because of his disability. I can't stand "pity votes." I recall my frustration as the season progressed and he remained a contender. Matt Giraud, on the other hand, was a favorite and remained a favorite. I was sad to see him leave the show. After watching tonight's performance, I remember why I enjoyed him so much. Matt is a great performer and singer. Even though this wasn't an original song, he was better than Scott. So, if I had to claim a winner from the dueling pianists, it would be Scott Giraud! I hope he continues to perform and make more beautiful music with those dancing digits. Overall, both men were very happy to be back on the American Idol stage, and Scott used the opportunity to advertise for some of his musical ventures. Matt was a little more "low key" and less bubbly.

After their performance and music update, Ryan Seacrest returned to the results. The final six singers were revealed. This was when the real shockers were revealed. After being on such a high from the piano performances, this brought me to a low. My Own American Idol List indicates how frustrated I've been with America's rather biased voting, and tonight was no exception. To put it bluntly, America got it wrong. I was sad by the end of the night but grateful that my favorite female performer wasn't sent home before the top twelve.

If you want a full list of the top twelve singers for American Idol, season 9, I recommend checking the American Idol Episode Wikipedia Page. I try not to spoil the results in my Lunch reviews in case you are new to the show or thinking about watching a few of the episodes.

Despite my sadness and disappointment with America, I am excited to see the top twelve perform in the upcoming episodes. I'm looking forward to many "wow" moments as the weeks progress.

Yeah, America seems as if they're being pretty biased here. I think that's part of the reason why I've never really been able to be a big AI fan. Certain contestants will always have a MUCH better chance over others because of America's bias when it comes to voting. That's always bugged me about this show. The "Rolling Stones" theme sounds interesting. It forces the singers to step out of their comfort zone and do something different for a change. That's cool. Great review. :-)

But that's the whole reason why you should watch the show! If more people like you and I don't watch, the people who deserve to win won't. We can be that change! I'll rope you in someday, lol!

I haven't watched the results show of the Rolling Stones theme week, but I did watch the performances. They were all really good, and I should be writing a review about it in the next few days if you want to read and comment on it.
