"Top Chef Masters" Isn't as Delicious as its Predecessor

On Top Chef Masters, world-renowned chefs compete in challenges from some of the best Top Chef episodes from the past.  These chefs, that include Rick Bayless and Hubert Keller, compete for $10,000 Dollars, a sum that will go towards a charity of the chefs choosing.  In total, the competition consists of 24 well known chefs, with the winner of each moving on to the Masters Final Round in which the chefs will compete for $100,000 Dollars for their charity.

Unfortunately, as much as the premise of the show is a decent idea, Masters lacks the excitement and enthusiasm that the regular Top Chef exudes.  For starters, Kelly Choi, the host of the show, is as dull as a poorly kept chef's knife.  She gives off no emotion and makes you not want to care about the show.  As far as the chefs themselves go, they are just as dull.  In a way, you can't blame them; they've been cooking for so many years that despite how hard some of the challenges seem to be, it comes off like it was a cake walk for them.  Besides that, they don't really give off any kind of urgency or care towards what they are working on.  I don't think they really care whether they win or not.  That's what makes Top Chef so exciting, the chefs on that show are still up and coming and are enthusiastic about food and cooking.  The challenges that are laid before them are...challenging.  In short, Masters has no UMPH!

I'm not terribly saddened that I can't really enjoy Top Chef Masters.  Top Chef Vegas will be on soon and I can't wait for that.  Bravo is also planning a second spin-off called Top Chef Junior that I am very excited about.  The show will feature teens who are aspiring to be chefs.  This is right down by alley since I myself am in Culinary School. Maybe in the future when I'm a seasoned chef, I'll have a better appreciation for Masters, but for now they just seem to me like a bunch of people who could care less about whether they win or not... they're already famous.  2/5

You are so right. My wife and I both remarked that this is not as exciting as the original. While the quality of the food is better, it lacks the drama and excitement of the regular season. I do enjoy it and it is great to see these "name" chefs compete. Great Review!
