Challenging Racing with Cartoon Network Characters

Pros: Nice challenging racing game with good depth of play difficulty

Cons: Poor character choices and having to purchase characters for each difficulty level

The Bottom Line: Fun racing game that is a good challenge for those that have played kart racing games, although the Cartoon Network theme is not all that attractive.

Racing games are some of my favorite video games to play, especially for handheld systems like the Nintendo DS. I do not like to drive in real life, but I do like the thrill of driving in video games and the fact that it is a game and it is okay if you end up driving bad.

The Cartoon Network racing game has characters and levels based on several Cartoon Network shows, such as Dexter's Laboratory, Courage the Cowardly Dog, and the Power Puff Girls. Personally I do not really like any of the Cartoon Network shows, but that did not stop me from enjoying the racing aspect of the game. For some the fact that you are racing with favorite Cartoon Network characters may make the game more fun, but if you are just into kart racing and not the shows you can still enjoy the racing.

The game starts with only one difficulty level and one cup unlocked. After you beat each cup you unlock the next until you beat the fourth and unlock the next difficulty level. Then it starts over with unlock cup by cup until you unlock the third difficulty level and then the fourth difficulty level. I do not really like how you only unlock one cup at a time and would prefer that you start with all four cups in the first difficulty and then when you beat them you unlock all the cups in the second difficulty, but at least once they are unlocked you can freely choose between them. It just can get kind of boring racing the same cup over and over when it is hard to win the cup.

This game certainly is not one of the easier to beat kart racing games I have played, but that is why I enjoyed playing it so much. I liked that it was a challenge just in the first cup, although not too challenging, as it only took a few tries to beat each cup. The second difficulty level was nicely challenging as well, while by the time I got to the third it was almost frustratingly hard, but I still liked the challenge. The depth in difficulty sure gives the game a good amount of depth.

As you beat cups you earn coins, which can be used in the Toon Shop to buy added features. This includes buying more characters and upgrading the characters to be available in the harder difficulties. I do not mind the part of buying the new characters, but it is kind of annoying that you also have to upgrade each one when you want to use them in a higher difficulty level cup.

The game also has a few mini games that you unlock by purchasing in the toon shop. One of these is a drawing game in which you trace characters. You try to trace 75% before the time runs out. It can get boring, especially once you get through all the characters, but it is a nice break from racing.

The graphics for the game are not all that great with the scenery not being all that detailed. The characters do, however, look a lot like they should. The courses may not be the best DS graphics, but they are at least fresh scenery to race through.

Overall this game is a lot of fun if you like racing games, especially if you like Cartoon Network characters. I would not recommend it for those that have not played a lot of kart racing games, though, because it starts out kind of hard and just gets harder. Thus this is not all that good of a choice for some kids that may want it because they like Cartoon Network.
