Bizarre...an unfortunate experiment...

This is one of the strangest games I have played, but it's not as bad as some people say. I like the original concept (a fighting game with characters modeled on Kabuki actors), the art style and some of the wacky theatrical character designs. The animation and detail for the character models are actually pretty good for an Xbox launch title. The modestly paced swordfights which climax in dramatic sprays of blood makes the game feel kind of like a 3-D SAMURAI SHOWDOWN. Thus, at first glance, it might seem rather appealing.

After that though, one begins to notice the crippling fault of the game...there's just not much to do. Fighting is extremely limited with only one attack button being used for everything offensive (minus the special move). So even though there are like 10 different characters, they all play fairly the same with the main distinguishing factors being the size of their swords and special moves.

Tour Mode is the main attraction of the game. Basically Tour Mode is your general arcade mode with a twist, you can use the money you earn during fights to skip levels and get closer to the final battle in less time. But Tour Mode can be beaten in about 30 minutes, is the same for every playthrough, and awards the player with absolutely NOTHING (no ending cutscene, no character endings, no unlockables, etc.). The other features are Time Attack Mode and Vs, which function just as you would expect them to. That's it. There's not even a difficulty level setting!! And given how incredibly simple the AI is in this game, you'll be wishing there was. Likewise, in terms of value, it's impossible to recommend.  It's strange because it feels so blatantly unfinished...why did it get released as a full priced product?

The only way this game could be any value is if it had been packaged with the original Xbox for free (like ALTERED BEAST or something). Indeed, it feels more like a tech demo rather than a real game. But given that more Xbox's were being packaged with HALO, one realizes how pointless it was to seek this title out.

It's sad...it could have been a lot better. Only for the morbidly curious.

On 4th thought, I'm moving this down another point. My sentiments about the game haven't changed. However I was looking at my other reviews and noticed that MAX PAYNE has +3 while this had -1, only a 4 point difference. That Max Payne could be any more than at least 5 points away from this game is unthinkable. I also added the price I paid for the game at the beginning so at to better put my reaction in context.

I would actually choose Altered Beast over this. I thought this games was horrendous. I haven't touched this game in many years, so I might pull it off the shelf just because.

When you get down to it, there's really just not much of a game here to actually play. As faulty as it was, ALTERED BEAST at least had a beginning, middle and end.

In the case of KABUKI WARRIORS, I guess the reason I was pleasantly surprised was because I came in with the worst expectations possible. I was expecting an unplayable glitchy mess.  Well, the game was perfectly functional and had a couple interesting ideas. It just didn't put any of the stuff it had to good use.

On second thought, I should probably knock it down another point or two because I really don't want to give people the impression they should be paying money for this game.

If you do bring it out again, make sure its on a 360 for best resolution + graphical cleanup.

EDIT: After bringing this out again one more time, I think I'll leave the score. Gamespot gave this game a 1.4/10, which I think is a little harsh.  To me, technical stability is a major factor.  The 1/10 score should only be reserved for those games which are technically unplayable. I'm thinking specifically of BIG RIGS, which was nothing but a bag of glitches and had no rules and no purpose. KABUKI WARRIORS by contrast, is a FUNCTIONAL game. It's just a poorly realized and very short one.

As for enjoyment, well, I would be lying if I said I didn't get a kick out of jumping around blasting people with fireballs while playing as the final boss.

I also disagree with Gamespot's comments about the presentation...I thought the audio portion was rather appropriate.  The "OooAHH!!!" yells are appropriate given the subject matter, and I like the little touches such as the heavy padding of feet on wood and the clinking of swords and armor, and of course the satisfying spraying of blood.  One review also complained about how the female character sounded like a man.  First time I heard that though, I thought it was intentional because in Kabuki theater women are traditionally played by men.

Prior to playing KABUKI WARRIORS, I had experienced FROM DUSK TILL DAWN for the PC, which was released just a few months before. That game struck me more as deserving total scorn. Aside from the unbelievably poor presentation and mediocre gunplay, the game was just plagued with bugs to the point where, every time I got stuck, I wondered if it was the result of a glitch. That's not counting the frequent lockups and crashes.  Maybe I'll put up a review of that soon.  Suffice to say, I experienced none of these problems with KABUKI WARRIORS.

I don't even remember Gamespot's review on  this but I would probably take a look at it should I decide to replay and review this. It's not looking too likely I'll do that though, because there are plenty of games I want to play for reviews sake that are more interesting. For example, I'm thinking about getting a Wii U next week when they're back in stock.

I understand where you're coming from with 1/10 being technically unplayable, but I rate similar to them and I would hand out that rating to something I just hate. But I can't think of game that bad though. Oh wait on second thought, Superman 64 is the only game like that I can think of at the moment. That game is so horribly put together I wouldn't even replay it for review's sake.

I don't play PC games, but I know that's a frustrating experience.

Regarding the 1/10 rating being handed to something you just loathe, I guess I can totally understand that. I can say for sure that I didn't have that experience with this game. Still, if you play this game again and you feel it ultimately deserves a -5, I will support your decision. :)

Regarding PC games, I don't blame you.  I would say playing retro, lesser known PC games is not something to be particularly envious of. I find its simply too much stress getting them to work properly in the first place. Most of us don't have time to play a lot of games, let alone solve the puzzle of how to get them to play.

In fact, I just remembered another game I would put on the list of "worst ever" would be GODS AND GENERALS, which was also for the PC.

How is this game selling? That's the ultimate concern of the manufacturer.
November 25, 2012
Oh of course. The question "...why did it get released?" is actually kind of pointless since the answer's obvious from a manufacturer's perspective. What I was trying to convey was the astonishment I had upon completing Tour Mode for the first time: "That's it?? I didn't pay any money for this, did I...Oh No!!!" Fortunately for $2, it wasn't too much of a sacrifice. Iirc the game sold pretty poorly and rightly so.
