A solid if at times fustrating game.

Pros: Great graphics and action.

Cons: A.I,. is weak, very high learning curve.

With the success of the epic Homeworld series, Vivendi Universal has embarked on a gripping and challenging new entry into the tactical space simulation with the release of Nexus: The Jupiter Incident.
In the distant future, Earth has become a mix of various corporations fighting over territory and natural resources. In addition to rival corporations, there are also various alien races to contend with, each with their own agendas and motivations.
Missions tend to unfold in a standard format for this genre, mainly combat, escort and exploration and are supported throughout by a well contained voice acting system that will keep gamers in the know each and every step of the process.
The game does require a lot of micromanagement as there is a high degree of detail and planning required. This is not a straight up seek and blast game, as you would be soundly defeated without planning. One such example is the notion that some weapons work better against certain types of ships and their shields, so it is important not to get stuck with a weapon that will lay waste to one ship yet do no damage to another.
The lack of resource gathering allows players to concentrate on ship creation and management as it will be needed, due to the sheer scope and complexity of the game. The control system may be frustrating to some but in time, players who stick with it will soon find themselves in complete control over vast fleets and areas.
Graphically Nexus is without peers as the detail level on the shops and the various lighting effects during combat will impress even the most jaded gamers, and work well with the story to get the adrenaline pumping.
Combined with the solid voice acting and music, the visuals and sound are in perfect balance as there is never too much of one where it seems like overkill or becomes distracting to the flow of the game.
The multiplay aspects of the game are fun and challenging but I would not try them until you have logged in several hours of solo play. Being able to manage your fleet and understanding of the control system is vital to the overall success as is balancing the ships load out.
The only fault I have with the game aside from the high learning curve would be with the A.I. Ships tend to blindly follow in a line and do not show much in the way of preservation in combat unless ordered to. I am sure that a future patch will address this issue leaving high potential for the game to become one of the best tactical space simulations ever seen on a P.C.
