Not perfect, but a solid compilation nevertheless for Sonic fans old and new.

Sonic Mega Collection is a collection of all of Sonic's games for the Sega Genesis, plus some extra games and features. Having grown up with all the Sonic games, I am pleased to see that they've all been brought together in one neat package. While not all the games are awesome, the compilation as a whole is a great addition to any Gamecube/Wii collection. The games in this collection are as follows:

Sonic the Hedgehog (1991): In his very first adventure, Sonic rushes to stop Dr Robotnik from taking over the planet. For its time, this game has incredible speed, graphics, music, and gameplay. With six levels of high speed action and addictive and challenging bonus stages, the original Sonic has rightfully been deemed a classic. A great start to the long-running series!

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (1992): More of the same, only better! With more levels, better graphics and sound, awesome boss battles, the addition of Miles "Tails" Prower as a sidekick, and a neat 2-player mode, this is one of the best Sonic games ever! It is a childhood favorite of mine, and it is fun and challenging. If you have never played this one before, try it out. You will not be dissappointed.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1994): Although it has fewer levels than its predecessors, this game nevertheless has plenty of great fun while it lasts. Sonic and Tails explore the Floating Island try to stop Robotnik from stealing the Chaos Emeralds, and its guardian, Knuckles the Echidna, from trying to stop them. The levels, bonus stages, and boss battles are as fun as ever. Even better is its direct sequel...

Sonic and Knuckles (1994): Best described as Sonic 3 Part 2, as it picks up directly where the third game left off. Now Sonic and Knuckles find themselves fighting Robotnik-and each other- as the fate of the Floating Island hangs in the balance. For the first time, Knuckles is playable, and comes with his trademark gliding and punching abilities. Not too much different from Sonic 3, but the sheer variety this game has, especially when locked on with other games, makes it one of Sonic's best.

Sonic 3D Blast (1996): Sonic's last Genesis game and, unfortunately, the worst game in this collection. Our hero travels to Flicky Island to save the roboticized Flicky Birds from Robotnik. This is an early example of why Sonic has mostly failed to work in 3D. The isometric viewpoint does not work well for him, and he moves a bit slower than normal. The repetitive gameplay-destroying robots to save the birds-gets dull after a bit, and despite some fairly long levels, there is no save feature. On the plus side, the graphics are fairly impressive, and the soundtrack is cool. Approach with caution.

Sonic Spinball (1993): Sonic invades Robotnik's Veg-O-Fortress and must get pass its pinball defense system in order to retrieve the Chaos Emeralds, save his friends, and defeat his nemesis. The other mediocre game in this collection, marred by difficult challenges made more frustrating with somewhat poor pinball controls. it can still be fun for a while, though.

Dr Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (1993): In this puzzle game based on Puyo Puyo, you must match up the falling beans four or more at a time to save them from being turned into robots by Robotnik and his henchmen. Fun and addictive for one or two players, and one of the Genesis' best puzzle games.

As you play these games, you can also unlock the following:

Blue Sphere (1994): The bonus stages from Sonic 3 and Sonic and Knuckles inspire this collection of stages in which you must pick up all the blue spheres while avoiding the red ones. There's a ton of stages here, and you WILL get addicted.

Knuckles in Sonic 2 (1994): Now you can play as Knuckles in all of the Sonic 2 stages. Very cool...but be warned that his feeble jumping skills makes the last boss battle-in which you have no rings whatsoever-nearly impossible.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles (1994): Sonic 3 the way it was intended, with 14 levels, multiple playable characters, and a lot of different endings. A must play for all Sonic fans!

Flicky (1991): In this arcade game, help Flicky rescue the little chicks from the hotel rooms. A pleasant surprise if you give it a chance.

Ristar (1995): Join Ristar as he journeys through seven levels in his quest to rid the galaxy of the evil spacelord Greedy. A longtime favorite of mine, Ristar shines with his ability to stretch his arms and grab onto stuff. This game is filled with clever level design, cool secrets, amazing boss battles, and graphics and music that must be seen and heard to be believed. A definite gem!

In addition to the games, you can also check out such extras as an Archie comic book gallery, a few comics to read, the animated cutscenes from Sonic CD, and some trailers of other Sonic games.

This collection would have been perfect if not for the additions of Sonic 3D Blast and  Sonic Spinball. Nevertheless, it is a great way to play a lot of classic games on one disc. If you're new to Sonic, or you've been a longtime fan of the Blue Blur, this is the compilation for you!
