Sonic The Hedgehog 4 was developed by Dimps and published by Sega. It was released for the PSN Network, Xbox Live Arcade and the Wiiware Services on October 17th 2010.
Sonic 4 takes place shortly after the game Sonic & Knuckles. After destroying The Death Egg Space Station sonic decides to take a much-needed rest. Little does he know that Dr Eggman survived their previous encounter, so once again its up to sonic to step up and save the day. Fans rejoice as the old school Sonic from both his and Sega’s glory days has returned. If you played the old games you will notice that many items like the Bubble shield, speed shoes, invincibility etc return. All the speed, enemies and even the special stages make an appearance.
It seems though like the game is geared towards offering a nostalgic experience to gamers as there are few new feature found in the game. First and foremost the game features a homing attack feature that allows you to lock onto enemies and attack, also included in the game are online Leader Boards, and the ability to replay any completed level by selecting it from the main menu.
Graphics wise Sonic 4 looks just fine. Everything is rendered in 3D but like the retro games, gameplay takes place from the 2D perspective. Gameplay wise like I said earlier all the speed and items we all know and love return. One major annoyance for me were the puzzles in every level, they were extremely annoying (yes I know I said that already) and took away from the speed of the game. Apart from this nothing much has changed. Control Wise Sonic 4 is played with the wiimote held in the horizontal position. Some things in the game do require you to use the accelerometer.
Overall I had very few gripes with the game, the only things that really irked me were the in level puzzles and some of the music. (Some of it was really awful)Apart from that I found the game to be really fun, it is a nice throwback to the retro Sonic games of yesteryear. Some people look at that as a bad thing but I had no problem with it, if anything I hope that in Episode 2 the developers introduce us to so new Levels, items, characters, and hopefully music.
