Fun Larryboy Game, But Only If You Have Tons of Patience

Pros: Good graphics for a Game Boy Advance game, fun sounds

Cons: superjump is really hard to master, jump situation in first level also hard

The Bottom Line: Overall this is not for most kids because it is just too hard, however for those with patience who like Larryboy this can be an enjoyable game.

This is a good game concept and the animation is well done, but in the end it is a failure because it is too hard for the majority of those who will want to play it to get very far. The game mostly appeals to those that like VeggieTales and/or the Larryboy superhero spin-off. The fans of this Christian morals series with veggies and fruits as the characters tends to appeal to kids under around age 8. Thus the complexity of the game is not well-suited for a game that young kids are going to be the main ones wanting to play it.

In the game you play as Larryboy and work your way through the levels to complete your mission. In the very first level the complexity of the game shows up with there being a very hard jump you have to make at exactly the right time onto a moving platform that also involves you being just the right amount on the edge of the stationary area. This can make the game frustrating from the get go.

The next few levels are pretty easy, but then the level where you learn to do the superjump is hard because the complexity of the controls for the superjump, which are shown really fast in the tutorial for the level and is just downright confusing even for an adult like me who has played plenty of similar style video games. Basically you have to press left or right depending on which way you need to make the jump, then you press and hold L or R and then press A to finally do the jump. Problem is this does not actually seem to always work and even if it does always work it is hard for at least young kids to get the hand of doing it. This is especially hard to master when if you fail the jump you end up falling down in the level because the superjump needed to be performed over a gap. I really do not understand why they did not use the normal double A for a superjump, especially since this is a kids game.

If you can magically master the superjump, then the game does become pretty easy going and fun to play. At least all the different moves and special items are explained in short tutorials before the levels and only the superjump is the troublesome control with a somewhat poor tutorial.

The sounds for the game are fun. The background music is interesting and not too repetitive. Also, I noticed occasionally hearing tunes from classic VeggieTales songs, such as Where is My Hairbrush?, which I thought was unique and added to the enjoyability to the game and helped make it a little less frustrating. I also like the sound effects such as when going up the ladder or doing a superjump. Lastly, I love the appearance of the French Peas sitting next to the switches and turning them off after Larryboy turns them on. To stop them for a time you activate a boombox, which adds to the variety in the level sounds.

Overall this game can be fun, however, most kids will get frustrated with the game in the early levels and not get far enough to really enjoy the game. Thus, I only recommend it for kids that do not give up easily when learning to play new video games and/or are very experienced video gamers. Unfortunately, on this second half if they are experienced video gamers they probably will not like this game except if they are big Larryboy fans.
