Finally, a crime dramedy!

If you're looking for a new show to watch other than reruns check out Castle on Saturdays or online at abc.com.

It stars Nathan Fillion from Serenity/Firefly as Richard Castle, a super handsome, famous and rich murder mystery writer who stumbles upon equally attractive NYPD homicide detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) when a real-life killer reenacts one of his novels.  Castle also happens to be an awesome family guy--he's a father of an endearing teenager (who is 99.9% precocious-free!) and his mother lives with him.

The Homicide Department, including the Medical Examiner, are also easy on the eyes and unusually quick-witted, making the series entertaining and intriguing at the same time.

Although each episode starts off with a stylized, kind of art-y murder scene, the actual investigation does not involve fancy computers or blood spatter analyzers.  You won't see ultra-zoomed-in bloody hair follicles or custom-made 3-D holographic imaging machines.  This show is more old-fashioned, in that the real challenge of solving the crime is not by dissecting the evidence--it's only when Castle and the homicide team start to understand the complex yet intuitive aspects of the human condition and human relations, that the true motive and murderer are revealed.  Also, Castle and Beckett are really good at interrogating suspects. :)

Don't get me wrong--this is no Diagnosis Murder or Murder, She Wrote.  People do get shot and stuff.  But it does give you the feeling of an older generation of murder mystery shows with just the right amount of strong, idiosyncratic personalities (think Columbo), romantic tension (think Remington Steele), a lively supporting cast (think Moonlighting), and enough realism that you don't mind suspending disbelief for pretty much anything else not covered above. :P

I rated this a 5 because each episode is well-crafted and successfully provides that satisfying feeling of becoming engrossed with the plot and characters for an hour, minus commercials.  Also, it's laugh out loud funny at times.  And who doesn't want some inexpensive escapism?

I would recommend this for anyone who wants a break from Law & Order or CSI, or who wants something they can watch without having nightmares afterwards.  And for Nathan Fillion fans who hates getting bummed when good shows get pulled after just one season (or not even one season!).
