Dainoji hit the Air Guitar world with guns a blazing in 2006. Then in 2007 he ably defended his title with some new twists and more personality. In 2008, Dainoji failed to impress and did not even make it into the top three. Another hero comes crashing down.
In the 2008 format, each artist performed two songs. Dainoji chose some hard driving numbers, but each lacked the popular appeal of his earlier choices, Are You Gonna Be My Girl? and Gotta Keep 'Em Separated. So the songs themselves did not generate the same energy. Additionally, he didn't have much new to offer this year in terms of personality and style. The windmills were back and in top form. But there was nothing really different to excite the crowd, like last year's little dance when the song changed tempo. Ironically, the 2008 winner stole Dainoji's move of throwing the guitar in the air and waiting for it to come down after an impossible delay.
Dainoji is still one of the best, but he needs to come back next year with something fresh to recapture the title.
