DeadJournal is like a darker version of LiveJournal. It's made from LiveJournal's open source code, after all, so it has all the perks and features of LiveJournal, except it has a black background and "dark" labels for everything. For instance, user profiles are labelled "Obituary", and friends pages are labelled "Survived By...". Though not intentional, it's kind of cute and playful. The cutest part about DeadJournal are their goth boy and goth girl emoticons!
The one downside to DeadJournal versus LiveJournal is that DeadJournal has a lot less users and therefore, has less active and notable communities.

DeadJournal's just a blogging site that spoofs off of LiveJournal and is geared towards a certain niche of people. I think the reason it used to be so popular is because LJ used to restrict its membership and be invite-only, whereas DJ didn't. Once LJ opened and stopped being invite-only, pretty much all of my DJ friends flocked there. I'm curious as to what the stats are on LJ vs DJ...
This is actually pretty hilarious, but I don't get it... Why is there even a DeadJournal in the first place? Does it serve a specific group of people or is it just an offshoot, or something else?
