YouTube video of Joe Cocker

Joe Cocker began his set at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair at 2pm on Sunday, August 17, 1969.  The song, "With a Little Help from My Friends", was the last song in his set.

Joe Cocker!!!

I still get goosebumps when I watch this video.  I am in awe of Joe Cocker's performance here.  Who would have thought a vocalist could put this much energy into a single performance?  Here is what I love about this video:

  • He has the courage to cover a Beatles song.
  • He has the audacity to do a better version than they do!
  • He sings with his tongue outside of his mouth half of the time.
  • He is definitely in the zone.
  • He becomes one with the music.
  • His passion reaches out and grabs you!

The falsetto backup vocals get a little annoying, but I guess they serve to accentuate Cocker's own vocals in contrast.

BTW, I think Joe Cocker invented air guitar.  How cool is it that he was doing air guitar during his Woodstock performance?  And it is one awkward, geeky air guitar performance at that!

And you gotta love the muttonchops, oh the muttonchops!

Its cool in the movie for sure, but my ex used to dance like that only on one leg, I used to call it the Joe Cocker flamingo. It was a tad embarrasing.
