Helping to Murder Writer's Block and Feed Muses Since 1999
May 31, 2009
To start off, I must confess that I have never seen a better generator site. It just tops all the others I've found, including those that it links to. (Though those links are just another helpful feature of this site.) If you don't know what a generator is (no, not electricity), then let me explain. A generator is set up to give random results. It's like rolling dice, only with words. Example: The Quick Name Generator gave me Janis Tanner and Helga Decker. Those are two of the fifty names it supplied for me by setting my options and clicking a button. The Quick Name Generator puts names together using a list of first and last names, choosing randomly, and it occasionally puts in a middle name too!
In each of these categories is a plethora of generators relating to that category. There are crossovers, like the Magic Items generator, which would be in both Magic and Equipment. I spend much of my time in the Names and Magic categories, which help me move along with a good number of my stories. Artists might find the Charaters or Beings categories more useful for inspiration, and a fanfic writer would obviously head for Media/Fandom. There's a little something here for everyone, even those who are just bored and in need of entertainment. (Example: Humor)
Has a Library to help you make your own generators (Even supplies code!)
Unfortunately, it does not contain every generator one could possibly want. (My biggest beef is no Town Name Generator!)
Not all results of generators turn into a usable idea. (That goes for all generators though.)
Sometimes you end up with word salad. (Doesn't make any sense)
To summarize, Seventh Sanctum is a site I've found to be very helpful over the years, and I hope this review will encourage other artists and writers to check it out. So release the single-minded radioactive demonic lemmings, break out your prismatic bracelet, jump on your Hastemobile, and go check out Seventh Sanctum!
