Every time I feel the house shake a little I jump on my computer and check out the Southern California Earthquake Data Center's website. They have a great map of California and Nevada that shows earthquakes from the last hour (in red), last day (blue), and last week (yellow). Each quake is represented as a box with the appropriate color, and the box's size corresponds to the earthquake's magnitude.

The website loads very quickly and is often updated within seconds of an earthquake. Most recently, after the July 29, 2008 Chino Hills/Diamond Bar earthquake, the website was updated almost 90 seconds later to show a big red box over the area. You can even partake in a survey for each major quake called "Did You Feel It?" that takes down your perceived shaking and experience and assigns you to an intensity scale. You can then view a map and see how others from your zip code felt, too.

It's always a fun and informative site to visit. And it's a must for your bookmarks, too, if you live in California!

In my part of the country earthquakes are a pretty rare thing. This is a fascinating site. Thanks for the tip!

This is really helpful! There have been quite a few earthquakes in the last few months that I've noticed and then never heard about again. I love finding out exactly where it occured and how big it was ... so I think I might become addicted to this site. Thanks for sharing!
