"I do one thing...I do it very well...then I move on." -Major Charles Emerson Winchester III, -M.A.S.H.
In this day of mashups and massive websites that seem to do everything, Meetways does just one thing. Is that a good thing? In this case, since the "big boys" don't do it, I think this might serve your occasional need.
I came across this website while negotiating a way to meet up with a friend who lives in Northern California. Being mutually accommodating, we uttered the credo of compromise - "let's meet halfway". We had no idea where halfway would be. Sure, we could look at a map and eyeball it or pull out a ruler and been done with it in a few minutes, but what fun is that? I powered up Google and started to search.
I found meetways.com and put in our zip codes and BOOM...halfway point located. I did a general search for a midway point, but you can opt to search for specific "points of interest" like hotels, pizza, coffee, etc. Hotels.com is a visible sponsor.
The site is powered by Google Maps and finds the "points of interest" using the Google Local Search API. Nice stuff. Makes you wonder why Google Maps, or Yahoo Maps or MSN/WindowsLive/Bing Maps or Mapquest haven't integrated this sort of feature. Further utilizing the power of Google, you can get reviews of the "points of interest" right from meetways.
So in summary and conclusion, meetways...
...does one thing. it finds the halfway point between two locations
...does it very well. with Google powered features, find the best of the halfway point complete with reviews.
...then moves on. nothing else to see. Get in your car and go!
Major Winchester would be proud. Although I bet he wanted to get significantly more than halfway back to Boston.
