Award winning Ruby Style Port, Eagles Nest Winery

Ahh yes Port, a great after-dinner accompaniment with dessert or as dessert. Whether it's a Ruby or a Tawny no matter, it has a way of making me yearn for a roaring fire during a cold winters night, sharing a bowl of toasted walnuts with some friends to raise a glass to the great tradition of Port.

Most wine drinkers have come across a Port or two, well the one I am very happy to introduce you to is produced right here in San Diego. Yep, that it's right out in the Ramona AVA. This wine has recently received some recognition from the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition, for which Eagles Nest Winery won a Silver Medal, which is no small feat according to Dennis Grimes the winemaker he say's "our Ruby Port was competing in a field of over 2,700 entries from over 500 Wineries with fifty different judges who hailed from all over the country and the world."

Speaking of the winemakers/owners with a quick note from their website, Eagles Nest Winery & Cottage is family owned and operated by Dennis and Julie Grimes. The winery and a portion of their vineyards are located on their gated country estate over looking the west Ramona Valley in San Diego and all wines are artisanally produced in small lots, showcasing different varietals that express the diverse character and personalities.

Last night my wife and I finished off this beauty and wow it was even better! It sat opened in cellar for a couple of weeks and just yummy!

BTW, I've barrel sampled their 2007 Estate Syrah that they just bottleed and OMG, this wine is very good! With about six months of bottle aging it will be drinking even better. With only 20 cases available I would put my order in NOW! This Estate Syrah is just in it's very first year of production and promises only more great vintages to look forward to, warm days and cool nights are producing a wonderful Syrah! They also produced a wonderful South Coast AVA Syrah or as they call it the California Syrah. which is very good as well.   Cheers everyone!

@CuveeCornerWineBlog Great review! I love dessert wines and am always looking for a new port to try. If you like dessert wines, I just discovered this wine recently "Elio Perrone Moscato d'Asti Sourgal 2007". It's a sparkling Moscato that is amazing! They only come in the half bottle sizes and a little light on the alcohol at 5% but this little wine is an absolute crowd pleaser. I know you're in SD but if you're ever up in the LA area, I highly recommend Tasca Wine Bar also.

Hayes, thanks glad you liked the review! You have to give them a call and order some before they disappear. I will definitely have to be on the look out for that Moscato. I really love a good Moscato d'Asti pairs great with spicy foods. Thanks again and Cheers!
