A trip to Napa is not complete without a visit Opus One!

  • May 7, 2009
Opus One is a must stop for anyone who journeys to Napa, what I would describe as type of Mecca for enophile's everywhere. If you are new to wine, you will wonder what all the fuss is about, and if you are a self described "enophile" then you know what all the fuss is about and budget generously for the tasting price tag, as well as the average price per bottle being well over the Benjamin mark!

When you first pull up to Opus One which is surrounded my a huge wrought iron fence,  supported by marble pillars! As you continue up the long driveway to park, your eyes are treated to beautiful landscaping and breathtaking architecture. You immediately get the impression this is not a just another wine, it's the pursuit of excellence.

While some like to actually taste some fruit in their wine, still others beg for more simple earthy wines. With the main theme being the combining of the old and new worlds wines, for the purpose of making wine which in the traditional Bordeaux style, but with New World flair.

You can think of it this way, in the austerity vs. fruit forward style debate there is much clamor about what is a better representation of terroir, but what Opus One has done is cross the chasm and has joined hands with the old world to a make a wine which represents both ideals and incorporates  them wonderfully.   It was the marriage of both worlds encapsulated in this wonderful Bordeaux style wine.

While on our trip through Napa, my wife and I stopped at Opus One, the tasting fee then was $25.00 for a 5 ouce pour, which I still recall as a great experience. We ended up leaving with a 1996 Opus One (for which we paid, $250.00) and opened it on our five year anniversary just last year. Folks, this wine was superlative in all respects and while it was not always cellared correctly, as we didn't have the means then, it still had the stuffing to "slog through" heat wave after heat wave in San Diego and come out a wonderful champion of deliciousness.

However, with these kind of prices, this is not an everyday drinking wine by any stretch [unless you're Bill Gates]. Purchasing a wine of this caliber maybe best set aside is for a special occasion.  Buy a bottle from the year you were married and squirrel it away until you've reached a milestone year! Then enjoy, I believe it will be well worth it.

The tasting room is nothing like you will experience else where in Napa, it is a place to lounge and reflect on the amazing inebriant of fantastic quality.  The tasting for us was a wine which was not available for purchase, only by the glass.  Ask to see the barrel room, quite amazing as well.  Photo opportunities abound here!

thanks Bill. great write up. I've never been and always kind of avoided it because it seemed way to... snobby i guess. But hearing you describe it i'm ready to go lounge in that tasting room!
