I first began hearing about The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy (THGTTG) on some forums around the Internet. As such it painted the picture for me of being quite a nerdy sort of book. This would not be a bad thing at all and in fact as a nerd I felt obligated to check it out. As it turns out it is a book with a fantastic sense of humour along the same lines as Monty Python. In fact, the author and the troupe were good friends and Douglas Adams even wrote a skit for Monty Python once. Essentially if you like Monty Python it's definitely worth your while to check out Douglas Adams. I'm glad I did because since then I have read every book Douglas Adams has ever published!

THGTTG tells the story of one Arthur Dent who is just a typical Briton who goes to work in the morning, watches TV in the evening and enjoys cups of tea. This all changes when suddenly the Vogons announce they are destroying Earth to make way for an interplanetary overpass. Arthur somehow winds up on the Vogon's ship despite the improbable odds just before Earth is destroyed. He soon meets up with Ford Prefect (who is from Betelgeuse) and they are soon off on intergalactic journies.
The book is the very essence of British humour and you'll find yourself chuckling throughout. If you like to laugh, this book is for you.

I enjoyed all of the books in the series (even So Long And Thanks For All The Fish, which was below the usual standard).

This is the only book that never ceases to make me laugh out loud every time I pick it up. The cosmos should always have at least one Douglas Adams at all times. My favorite bit -- the SEP, or Someone Else's Problem. A giant space ship lands in the middle of a famous cricket pitch but the crowd doesn't see it because it's an SEP and people don't see SEPs. OK, I finally read it. It is occasionally barely funny but mostly just dumb. It is like Harry Potter in that I am forced to wonder how this has become such a big deal. I am not reading any more of the series. But I think I should recommend something better that no one ever heard of: Trample an Empire Down by Mack Reynolds. A good fast, fun read. I tend to reread Hitchhiker's every 5 years or so and recommend it as a gateway novel for people who like wacky comedy who might develop an interest in SF.

This book has the spirit of Monty Python in its writing (the author worked with the comedy troupe later on in their years together). If you like Flying Circus and love science fiction then you should definitely pick up a copy. The humor is wry, witty, and completely out of this world (lame pun I know).

The written work is priceless, the BBC mini-series version is adequate and amusing (if somewhat dated). The newer film is my least favorite of the versions out there right now. While amusing, it felt more like a cardboard cutout of The Guide.

This book is exhaustingly hilarious, all of them are. I picked up the combined edition of however many Hitchhiker books there are and just started reading. There was hardly a page that I wouldn't laugh out loud. The pace and cleverness of this book are beyond anything else I've read. The only problem is that I do not recommend reading them all in a row. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (HGG) is one of my favorite books of all time. Douglas Adams did an amazing job writing this book. His cleverness is evident on every page of this book and as you read further and further through the book you become in awe at the skillful mastery and planning of Adams.
