Harry Turtledove is a professional historian.  But he dropped out of CalTech.  So naturally he combined history and science and got alternate history science fiction.

Aliens invaded during World War II.  So we get historical figures like FDR, Hitler, Stalin, Enrico Fermi, General Groves of the Manhattan Project and of course General Patton fighing aliens from outer space.  It is a hoot, if you like it.  Of course a main character is a science fiction reader.  Who else knows what to expect from aliens?

The aliens have previous experience with this, having conquered two other species before.  Of course you can't trust humans to do what you expect.  That would not make for good science fiction written by a human.  At least I presume Harry Turtledove is not a member of THE RACE.

This series is rather long, taking up 8 books.

The aliens take over half of the planet in the first four books.  Then a second fleet comes, the colonization fleet.  That makes up the next three books.  Then the last has humans with their own star ship going back to the alien home world.

This series is definitely epic with lots of characters in lots of places.  And plenty of historical puns.

Fun if you like it, though I expect not everyone will.  Check out the first book to decide.

Meanwhile, the aliens, who refer to themselves as the Race, discover that their enemy is far fiercer and more technologically advanced than expected.

Plot summary

After arriving in the Earth's solar system, the Conquest Fleet's essential personnel are awakened from cold sleep after a twenty-year journey originating from Tau Ceti II. Fleetlord Atvar is busy making final preparations for the invasion of Earth, expecting a rapid victory over the primitive beings that populate the planet. He is interrupted by a communications officer who reports that radio emissions are emanating from Earth. Atvar refuses to believe the report since the most recent intelligence, gathered from a probe that visited Earth in the 12th century, indicates that the inhabitants are a pre-industrial species.

The Conquest Fleet reaches Earth orbit in December 1941 and begins surveying the planet. They are shocked to find that in the ...
