The intersection of privacy and publicity

Seeing danah boyd's keynote today was a great followup to Douglas Rushkoff yesterday. They spoke on very similar themes, namely that the future of this digital age is all about who has control. Dana posits that privacy = control. She used the examples of the recent launch of Google Buzz and Facebook's change in privacy settings in December to show how companies don't make privacy a priority, in fact quite the opposite, they want all our information shared. … more

danah boyd will always make you think.

danah is such a fresh voice at conferences like this. her talks are always well organized, dynamic and thought provoking. her research of youth and minority groups is amazing and thourough. some points i took away from her keynote: people put their content into the public, but you break their trust when you re-publish or make that content even more public. racisim is still evident in the social media realm. sadly, some people … more
