Dashiell Bennet, Anthony Derosa, Kate Miltner, Jamie Morelli, and Kelly Reeves explore the fascinating topic of the commenters mentality and "ecosystem". From the anonymous "trolls" to those who make a name by including their own when commenting: the panel discussed the positives and negatives on both sides of the fence.

Interesting points:

As a site owner, do you want to encourage over-active commenting, or discourage it? Often times those commenters are your most active readers: are you alientating them by discouraging a certain type of comments or police the comments too much?

Are the "haters" just a vocal minority, or indicative of how the public really feels about the content/topic?

The writer can "be their own troll" by posting about a topic or in a tone that they know will "fire up" their regular readers.

Are the commenters dictating editorial content?

This was a fun and thought provoking panel about a topic that we should all be thinking about as bloggers and social media professionals. Commenters are an active part of any online community and understanding the psychology of this group of active and vocal people can help you learn how to most maximize your contents impact.
