How to win Battledecks 2011

  • Mar 12, 2010

If you start preparing now, you (ok, someone like you) could take home the trophy at BattleDecks 2011.

1. Start drinking at 9am.
Only people who are already buzzed will get the high points for showing no fear, and be able to make any sense of the insane slides you will be presented to work with.

2. Spend a couple hours a day on 4chan
No, really.... you need to be up to date/speed on your internet memes. You are pretty much guaranteed at least 7 slides influenced by current memes. To really kick it up a notch, be SO familiar with the memes that you can not speak to them directly, but simply give them a nod that says, "Yeah, I know who that is, but I don't have name them."

3. Know your buzz-words
Though he didn't win, Chris Sacca came in with a strong second place. I credit his generous usage of words like, "platform", "cloud", and "penis".

4. Be a Writer for a Living
Well, apparently I couldn't hurt.

All jokes aside, there is something beautiful and inspiring about watching people think on their feet in front of a room of at least 500. The contestants who were most engaging were the ones who just committed to the process and went for it.

Whoa, this sounds awesome!  Like a rap battle except replace the rap with geek :P  I would also suggest hopping onto Oh No They Didn't.  A lot of the web memes end up there somehow.  Great review and funny tutorial, Thomas!

Admit it, how many SXSW newbies thought this session was about fighting robots?      Battledecks is a session that personifies the SXSW experience and shouldn't be missed.  Take one part powerpoint, one part karaoke, one part stand up comedy, mix it up and throw it against the wall and the ooze dripping down would be a good representation of battledecks.      This year, not only were the contestants at the top of their game, but the judges brought their …

About this activity

Event Description:
Battledecks is a fast-paced, fun, laugh riot where "contestants" have to put together a presentation on the fly as slides are randomly projected for their confusion and the delight of the audience. Contestants are then judged by a Panel of low-level celebrities, who can be bought. Battledecks was performed at SXSW '08, packed the room, and got great reviews. We are committed to having a diverse group of both contestants and judges.

Panelists include:
Jen Bekman (
Erika Hall (
Rebecca Bortman
Mike Monteiro (
Joshua Cagan (
Heather Armstrong (
Anil Dash (
Ted Rheingold (
