Great panel.  Cali & Jody have great ideas and a passion for what they do and that comes out when they talk.  Love it.  Jessica and Jeff had some great real-world examples for how to implement ROWE ideas in the workplace.

Some takeaways:

  • The company owns your work, not your face
  • People sometimes mistake their own fear for risk
  • ROWE is like Tivo for your work
  • At the Girl Scouts, they turned hourly non-exempt gift shop workers into salaried non-exempt workers who were paid based on a 37.5-hr work week (whether they worked that many hours or not) so they could participate
  • If you want to implement ROWE, you have to be willing to fire people when they don't perform.  (This reminds me of the parenting situation where, if you threaten kids with a punishment, you better follow through or else they'll know you don't mean it and continue doing whatever it is you don't want them to do.)  If you don't step up and fire people, you undermine the whole system
  • Leadership needs to change; leaders today require a new skill set

They should be posting a case study on the application of ROWE principles in the public sector to their website in the near future.  I personally can't wait for this one because I'm working for a state agency right now and can't see how ROWE would even be considered in that environment.

Good luck turning this into a mainstream movement!

Too much of a sales pitch, not enough practical advice/case study information.

@alevit Hoping America catches onto ROWE like the rest of the world. Siestas, doing work when YOU feel productive...
