Why do I use this thing?

Foursquare is not the first geolocating app to surface, but it seems to have gotten more of a foothold than some of the others. I had another called Loopt on my iPhone for a bit, but it's just no fun when it's just two of you pinging each other back and forth.

Somehow Foursquare's points for checking in, badges of honor and made-up Mayor status has helped make this app stick. Add all that to the integration with Facebook and Twitter, and I think Foursquare is going to be around for a bit.

In my opinion, something else that has really helped is that some businesses have given real meaning to the check-ins. When the digital Mayor status or badge gets converted to a tangible coupon of some sort, then we are no longer just geeks. We are successful bargain hunters!

Foursquare is paving the road towards using the smart mobile device as part of a loyalty program. This is not far down the road. Expect points to count more soon.

Meanwhile, there is still some sloppy duplication in my DC neighborhoods. I'll go to a movie theater and find it has three different entries in Foursquare. Bother. It takes time to build a crowdsourced database, though, and we all have been through so many of these ramp-ups by now, I can't take more than one point off for beta mode.

Still, I wonder if I'll ever live in a time when nothing around me is in BETA mode? hmmmm....

At this point, Foursquare is not doing much of anything for me except making me feel good about going places, (regardless of whether those places make me feel good about going there or not). So in essence, I'm racing my buddies to gain points for going out. It's a silly social game. But the interface is simple and user friendly, I am intrigued by the geolocation capability of my iPhone, the badges are smartly designed... so hey, why not
Why do I use this thing? Why do I use this thing? Why do I use this thing?

I still haven't used this yet, but mayhap I will in the future. Between yours and @devora's write ups, I get great info! Thanks, Heather.

Ha, awesome review, Heather!  I don't know if you've seen my foursquare review, but darn, I am addicted!  I actually have close to 10 geolocation based apps on my phone (I need an aggregator!), and foursquare is at the top of the list.  Most simple and efficient.  By the way, if you've been on the site for long enough, you can actually merge those duplicate entries.  A lot of the duplicate entries were from back in the day when their search function totally sucked ;P

I did read your review, too - also awesome! These are such timewaster apps, but perfect for geek chicks like us, right? I keep going back for more! LOL

A Way-Too-Addicting GeoLocation-Based App
When I heard about the concept of foursquare several months before I purchased my first smartphone, I knew that this mobile app was right up my alley.  I was already a twitterholic and tweeting my activities and whereabouts on the go, so how cool would it be if there were an app that could document this for me?  Furthermore, there's a little competitive spirit in foursquare in that you can become "mayor" of the places that you visit the most, and you have the ability to add friends …

Love the idea of a large social game via mobile, love that's it a way to let you know where your friends are. Love that you can compete with friends to show off how often you go out to cool places and what a scenester you are! But I don't like that many places (at least the ones I frequent) haven't been added to their database of establishments. Right now it's user inputed, which means there's a bunch of mispellings and other errors. While I'm sure the database …

After playing with both services for a better part of the conference, I think it's pretty clear who the clear winner is.  Check out my review of the services here.

I like foursquare because it brings an element of play to my day - favorite part is battling the husband for the mayorship of the house =)

I'm not digging @foursquare's new colors. It looks all boy'ish now. Please bring the purple back!

About this game

Wiki

Foursquare is a location-based social networking website, software for mobile devices, and game. Users "Check-in" at venues using text messaging or a device specific application. They are then awarded points and sometimes "badges." The service was created by Dennis Crowley and Naveen Selvadurai; Crowley had previously founded the similar project Dodgeball which Google bought and shelved in 2009.

Foursquare allows registered users to connect with friends and update their location. Points are awarded on weekends and non-business hours for "checking in" at venues. Users can choose to have their Twitter accounts updated when they check in. In version 1.3 of their iPhone application, Foursquare enabled push-notification of friend updates, which they call "Pings." Users can earn badges by checking in at locations with certain tags or for check-in frequency. The company has stated that users will be able to add their own custom badges to the site in the future. If a user has checked-in to a venue more than anyone else, on separate days, and they have a profile photo, they will be crowned "Mayor" of that venue, until someone else earns the title. Users can create a "To Do" list for their private use and add "Tips" to venues that other users can read.

Foursquare is now available worldwide.

Foursquare currently has iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry applications and is working on an application for the Palm ...
