Berkeley Y has a few challenges but if you are a Berkeleyite you'll probably like them.

I use the Y about three times a week for spin classes. Marjorie is the gold standard.  I really wish they could get her more, especially in the evenings.  Robert is next up.  After that it's a mishmash of mediocrity at various levels (I won't name names).  Sometimes you get someone with great music, but boring as hell as they talk through the class.  Sometimes you get someone who is a little entertaining with the microphone, but has the most awful top 40 taste in music and they repeat the same stuff over and over to their classes weekly or who literally programs an hour of music so similar you can't tell one song from the next (it's nice if some are fast and some are slow, for example, so that you can work hard, rest and work hard again).  Sometimes you get someone with no clue how to make the exercise routine varied enough that you get a serious workout, so you just have to make up your own routine as they trail off into some lame pattern that doesn't do anything to work your body.

I also go to swim, but watch for classes because if a class is on, they'll close some lanes.  Life guards make no attempt to limit lane use, and the movement of water from the water aerobics can cause you to bump the lane barriers over on the lap side of the pool and get pretty cut up.
They make no attempt to coordinate water classes so that there are no laps at that time, as another reviewer suggested (good idea!).

I use the women's gym which rocks!  Don't use the showers though as they seem a little sketchy.  And I always walk to the Y because parking is horrendous. Don't recommend driving at all.

Overall a good gym but they seem to bend toward the politically correct groups (older, kids, handicapped) and sacrifice everyone else a bit. If you can hang with that, then do it.

Also, they have way too many "sales" of crap (bookshelves of stuff to sell to parents and young kids) clogging the entry and making it hard to get through.  And way to many "holiday" hours.  Keep it simple, and clear the entry way and the hours please.  We actually want to work out and need more hours on holidays, not less!

Great to hear!  I used to go to school right next to this Y and I've heard nothing but great things about it.  Still gotta check it out for myself one of these days.  By the way, it would awesome if you joined my Secret Berkeley community and add your review there.  Your fellow Berkeleyites would appreciate it ;)  Thanks for sharing!
