Where do all the freshest fruits and veggies go when they've escaped the price-inflating clutches of Whole Foods? They happily prance to the glorious sun-drenched hills of Berkeley — to Berkeley Bowl, of course!
Here, they'll be sold at dirt-cheap prices by students and families who can't always afford to unnecessarily pay premium dollar for good quality produce. They'll be surrounded by Asian Pears, Persimmons, heirloom tomatoes, Italian eggplants, kumquats, and anything else you can imagine — all for dirt cheap to reasonable costs. 50 cents for a pound of cherry tomatoes? Sure, why not?
Many of the items here are organic, and others are not. They're clearly marked. Unlike most supermarkets, when produce items go on sale, they are not in that moldy stage yet. And yes, there are plenty of sales.
In addition to their centerpiece produce section, Berkeley Bowl is a full-service supermarket. They have a fantastic dried goods section of dried fruits, trail mix, cous cous, granola, pasta, you name it! Also, their British foods section, while small, is decent for anything you'll get in Berkeley.
Why do I love Berkeley Bowl? Because they make it possible to pursue a healthy eating lifestyle within budget.
