Sufficient Grounds has been around for a bit over 20 years, since 1989 (almost as old as I am!). The ownership may have changed over the years, but the location and menu, for the most part, have stayed the same. If you ask any regulars of Sufficient Grounds what keeps them coming back over the years, most of the answer will probably be, "the sandwiches", and by sandwiches, they probably mean the amazing housemade bread that they're made with. They're gigantic square blocks of thick, fluffy bread in either foccacia or honey wheat. My description cannot do them justice; it just has to be experienced.
Here are a few of my favorite things:
Sandwiches -- I prefer the honey wheat bread over the foccacia because it's got an extra sweet kick to it and "wheat" connotates "healthy", right? ;P Sandwiches can be ordered in half sizes and come with a side of either their tasty potato or pasta salad.
Pastrami Sandwich -- I don't know where they get their pastrami from, but I swear it's the best I've ever had.
Rosemary Chicken Sandwich -- made from scratch, they totally cut up and marinate the chicken themselves. It's heavenly.
Club Sandwich -- I think the picture that I uploaded of it says enough. It's huge!
Croutons -- Unbeknownst to most people, they actually make their own croutons from their housemade breads.
Berkeley Salad -- A vegetarian salad plus chick peas, avocado, and an egg, with your choice of dressing. Like their sandwiches, their salads are huge. Check out the picture above.
Chicken Caeser Salad -- Caeser salad topped with the same rosemary chicken from the sandwich.
Create Your Own Smoothies -- Yes, they may have several smoothie ideas, but I like making my own creations and they don't mind!
Brownie a la Mode -- Shhhh, this totally isn't on the menu, but if they've got the ingredients, they'll make it, and heck, they have brownies and ice cream, so why not? ;)
Cafe Beverages -- Oh, and did I mention that their cafe beverages are super tasty?
Since Sufficient Grounds is located around college town, the prices are very reasonable to cater to college students. For gourmet salads, sandwiches and drinks, I think that their prices are a steal. And did I mention that they have free wifi? I spend a lot of time Lunching there, both the meal, and the website!
Oh, and if you're going to downtown Berkeley and can't find street parking anywhere (a typical occurance), park at the parking lot across the street from Sufficient Grounds; they validate for purchases over $5, which is a great excuse to treat yourself to one of their sandwiches.
When I'm not Lunching, I'm a jeweler, and an all around, self-proclaimed web geek. My passions include social media, the interweb, technology, writing, yoga, fitness, photography, jewelry, fashion, … more
