My Favorite Musical Instruments

  • Apr 3, 2010
(A Lunch Featured List)
I was preconditioned to love the piano. It's all in the gene, you might say. 3 members in my family plays the piano real well. Me? I learned a few years & gave up. I hate practicing the scales! Just too monotonous for me. However, I love hearing from those who have managed to accomplish the impossible of sitting at the keyboards for hours. What I failed to learn on the piano, I did it well on the computer keyboard though ;-) For classical music, I like listening to Yundi Li & Lang Lang. For new age, I love hearing David Foster & Giovanni Marradi.

I must say I didn't come to love the violin until Secret Garden & Vanessa Mae. I'm not sure why either. As far as classical music goes, I like Toccata & Fugue. I think it probably has something to do with the organ element. I progressed from piano to the organ in my childhood. It's a lot more fun.
See the full review, "The Violin, The Soul".
Electronic Keyboard

I love electronic keyboard due to the fact that I love New Age Music and this is the medium most musicians use. My favorite composers are Omar Akram & Rolf Lovland.
Classical Guitar
Oh yes, classical guitar. Done that & been there too. A year learning it. Well, it didn't last ;-) Back then, I love Spanish Romance & now Have you ever really loved a woman.

Portuguese Guitar
When I was a child it was Spanish Romance I fell in love with. As an adult, I traveled to Portugal and fell in love with Fado!

Harp is flow. Very fluid, feminine & simply heavenly. Harp relaxes the being and revitalizes the soul. The sound is clear, reminds me of the forest, a stream and far far away from the rest of the world.

Organ is an experience, it demands your attention. I think perhaps that's why I liked it. It may be a little loud for some people but when played right, it's thunderous & one simply cannot ignore it! No way you could fall asleep when the organ is playing :-)
It was jazzy & it was sexy. The saxophone movement began in Kenny G's era and has now extended to Julian Smith (who won the 2009 Britain's Got Talent Bronze Award, behind Diversity & Susan Boyle).

Flute is not a major musical instrument, yet it has its place in Classical as well as Modern days music. Flute transcends place and time. It takes us away from the city to the starry nights in the valley of Grand Canyon. It is magical!

Pan Flute (Panpipes)
Panpipes remind me of Peru and Machu Picchu. It is associated with the Andes & the most beautiful music has touched my life even before I set foot in Peru. Yours too! Remember El Condor Pasa? Beautiful music from the most beautiful part of the world!

Yes, she's quite a performer on stage, isn't she? I had enjoyed many of her videos! But now I'm back to China this month, I've got no access to youtube again! What a bummer!!!

Piano is right up there for me, too! I'm only took lessons for like, a gazillion years :P Acoustic guitar is a very close second, and I've always wanted to learn how to play the violin. I bought one several years ago, but haven't gotten around to it yet. Great list, Sharrie, and I love the videos!

Thanks, Debbie! You reminded me of my niece, now she wants to pick up Violin after years of piano! She's also looking for somewhere to perform. My friend's Debbie's husband is actually a violinist who performs regularly at the York Philharmonic Orchestra in Toronto :-) Cool, eh?
