Oscar to go. And the winner is ...

I put this list up before the Academy Awards night & also at a time when I had only seen about 1/2 of the movies on the list. Now that I've watched 4/5 of them, I'm reordering the list based on preferential basis. It's subjective and according to what I like about the film. Nothing to do with who won what. So, here it goes...

The Blind Side

Enjoyed this movie very much. It's one that I'd consider to be great for the family. Healthy film of a real story. Sandra Bullock certainly looked great in this one and the rapport between her and the family members are excellent!

District 9

I was quite surprised I ended up liking this picture. It's low budget as one can tells from early in the show. But it has a human vs alien touch to it that one ended up rooting for those ugly aliens! Somewhat like Avatar in that sense. Avatar aliens are a lot prettier though ;-)

Inglourious Basterds

It was enjoyable enough but a bit too cruel and bloody for my taste. I never did understand war anyway. It's like a man's toy and way to kill boredom, if you ask me. Other than that, Brad Pitt did put up a reasonably good performance. The film does have a nice glow and touch to it, I must admit. I guess it ought to go for the Cinematography award instead although I know a lot of Lunchers will root for this film.

The Hurt Locker

One of 2009 most acclaimed films which had won quite a few awards. A war thriller. Nominated for 9 Academy Awards! Wow!!! As many as Avatar! Film was shot in Jordan and I was actually there in 2009! Just watched this and I must say it's a man's movie and the male species probably can appreciate it more than I ever will. I learn one thing though... & it is not that war is drug. It is war is the saddest thing on earth! No matter who wins, there is no real winner here. It may have been a necessary evil but it's the most depressing thing to watch & to know that in another part of the world, people are living hell!

A Serious Man

About a man finding balance in life & understanding the world around him. Larry Gopnik is deep in trouble though no fault of his own and since this is a comedy, it might be interesting to see how he copes especially if you're having problems of your own to deal with. I've just watched this movie since the list been up a day or two ago. Nope, don't like it. I simply couldn't relate, very unlike the next one.

An Education

I haven't seen and have no inclination to see this movie. A British movie about a girl studying for "A" Levels involving herself with older man who's of questionable character. She ended breaking up with him after finding out his fishy deals but then went off with another boy again? Well, if that's how I read correctly the plot it's not my cup of tea at all!

I see you didn't like the Academy's choice for Best Picture very much since you ranked it at 7. I thought they might actually solve their problems by splitting best director and best picture for the first time ever this year--giving one to AVATAR and the other to HURT LOCKER, but I was wrong too!

I don't really care that much for awards. I simply don't like anything to do with war. Not so much to do with how good the movies are. I've no capacity to appreciate war movies no matter what. Plus, I don't endorse wars. I never believed mankind can solved their differences by going to war. Even if a country is under attack. What did Jesus say?

"But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also."

Man's differences won't be solved by wars.

Wars are fought because the wrong leaders are in charge. And wars won't be stopped by demonstrating what went on in a war or how soldiers were affected & how they cope upon their return.

There are consequences in life and war is never one sided. I hate wars. I think people ought to think about their own intolerances rather than to blame others or to defend their own reasons for a war. Ultimately, the evil ones are seldom punished while the innocents were obliterated.

Incidentally, both of these movies are about wars. To me, Avatar takes a step further by showing the better side of mankind. Hurt Locker is harsh imho.

Great list. I haven't seen many of these either. Judging from your list, it seems we may have different tastes in films, but that's alright!

Thanks! That's probably because for me films are simply entertainment & what I do mostly is to forget about them after the shows :-) And age & culture differences do play a part too! I'm not very into film although I watched a lot more than others :-)

I think Avatar will win a lot of awards just because of the money it made (remember TITANIC?) However, I am not rooting for # 9 to win.
