Read A Banned Book - Banned Book Week Starts Today!

  • Sep 25, 2010
Banned Books Week is the only national celebration around the freedom to read, observed in 2010 from September 25 through October 2. Why do people challenge and ban books? Search everywhere for the answer to this question and it still remains a mystery. Sadly, banning books is not a thing of the past. Take a look at my personal favorite Banned Books list to view those frequently banned and challenged and don't be surprised to see many of your own favorites...

Wow - an amazing list and I can't believe some of these were banned! Little House On The Prairie? Really? Some others too like Alice In Wonderland and black Beauty!! Nice list...

Am I seeing some irony in banning FAHRENHEIT 451? My Friend Flicka and Flowers For Algernon?

Okay, now I know the reasons behind most of these being banned, but "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland"? Really?

In 1931, the book was banned in Hunan, China, because "animals should not use human language" and it "puts animals and human beings on the same level". In Woodsville High School in Haverhill, New Hampshire, the story also was banned, because it had "expletives, references to masturbation and sexual fantasies, and derogatory characterizations of teachers and of religious ceremonies.

LOL! That first bit is hilarious since most Buddhists hold that all life is equal. The second bit seems like they were reading the book with some sort of Freudian microscope.
