Movies with the Best Music Soundtracks

Lists (18)
Jan 30, 2010
You can't watch movies all the time, but that doesn't stop me from listening to their music whenever possible.  Nothing helps ease a commute or helps me power through work like a great soundtrack.  John Williams probably occupies at least 50% of my iPhone's disk space!
1
The Godfather
It's nearly impossible to make a mafia movie without some sort of nod to the original Godfather soundtrack. You can't hear this music without immediately images of Marlon Brando popping in your head.

2
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars definitely deserves credit for mixing a familiar classical orchestra soundtrack with a new space fantasy setting, but it's Empire Strikes Back where the soundtrack really flourishes. From the opening credits scroll to the Asteroid Field chase and Imperial March, every scene from Empire Strikes back can be recognized by it's score.

3
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Lord of the Rings soundtrack is all about "epic". The battles in these movies are immense and this soundtrack carries the movie perfectly. Just like Empire Strikes Back, it's the second act of the trilogy where the soundtrack really fills out and takes on the next level of emotion.

4
Top Gun
Kenny Loggins owns this soundtrack. Danger Zone, Playing with the Boys... 80's soundtrack gold! My only gripe with the original cassette release of this film is that it didn't have two of the biggest songs from the movie ("(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding and "You've Lost that Loving Feeling" by the Righteous Brothers".) It was a travesty that was corrected on the extended CD re-release.

5
DVD front
I guess Daniel Day Lewis was powerful enough to infuse the Last of the Mohicans soundtrack with a little bit of Irish influence, but it works. The music is brisk and diverse and pulls the story along.

6
Team America: World Police
Every single track on this album cracks me up. Matt and Trey deserve more credit for their song writing ability. "Montage" and "Freedom isn't Free" are great satires and the "Bummer Remix" might possibly be my absolute favorite.. Just don't to listen to it with the kids in the car.

7
Poster
This is such a great movie that it probably makes the soundtrack sound better than it really is, but the music is still full of dark and intense tracks. The music conveys a great sense of urgency and really draws you in.

8
My Fair Lady
I have to admit, after @babymama introduced me to My Fair Lady, I've caught myself humming some of the songs. Most of the songs have also been parodied in Simpsons and The Family Guy, so it shows its longevity and universal appeal.

9
Saturday Night Fever
I don't care what kind of music your parents were into, just about everyone owned this album. However, I can't tell you how long it took me to realize that the Bee Gees were men. "More than Woman" just never made any sense until realization.

10
Pulp Fiction Soundtrack
As much acclaim as Pulp Fiction received as a movie, it received equal praise for its soundtrack. Quentin Tarantino has an uncanny ability to cast the perfect actors for his movies, and the same can be said for the songs in the movies as well. This CD probably got played more in college than any other album I owned.

Yeah. Technically, the songs are on my iPhone b/c of my wife, but there are times when I don't automatically skip them when they pop up on random shuffle :-)

I couldn't agree more about the Top Gun soundtrack situation. What your list is missing is anything from the Disney family. C'mon! Little Mermaid? Lion King? Aladdin? That stuff is gold! I may have to make my own list. Where's Garden State? I guess I'm more into lyrics.

What a remarkably creative list!  I love this.  I like even better that you put in sample music from each of these.  I love the music in the entire Star Wars trilogy, but Empire definitely had the best soundtrack (I'm a huge fan of the Imperial March... and there's that scene where the millenium Falcon is flying through the asteroid field... love that music too).
