Best Star Trek Shows

  • Oct 30, 2009
Over 40 years of programming and nearly 900 hours of entertainment. I want to take a look at the shows that Star Trek made
Star Trek: The Next Generation
A reintroduction to Star Trek on TV had a shaky start but once it found it's footing, became the show that most people identify Star Trek with, following Captain Picard and his crew on adventures, action and missions of diplomacy and peace keeping. Has some of Star Trek's most unforgettable moments. The only show that comes close is...

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Rougher, darker and moodier Trek adventure puts a Federation crew co-habitating with a peaceful and struggling alien species on an abandoned space station to help keep peace. Perhaps the best ensemble of a Trek show with the best of balancing episodes and features in it's later seasons the most action of any of the series. Never had a weak season but it didn't soar the way Next Generation did at times.

Star Trek
The effects were corny and the cast was eclipsed by it's main three stars but the simplicity of design and setting of the show give it a timeless feel that none of the other shows had. The remastered shows definitely warrant giving it a second look.

Star Trek: The Animated Series
Animated take on the original series showcases through an animated medium what the Star Trek world could have accomplished with a larger budget in a live action setting. Fills in some important gaps in that five year mission and had some good episodes, it just ran too short.

Badly retconning at times Star Trek history may only be a minor quibble but only 4 seasons longcompared to 7 in the contemporary Trek shows, a love it or hate it third season and a real cop out on the finale leaves a sour taste in some peoples mouths. The far back in Treks history does have appeal. First Trek show to have a pop song as the intro!
Star Trek: Voyager
Interesting premise of a small Federation ship flung to the far corners of space and it's long and dangerous trek home gets flushed down the toilet with rarely exploiting the "Lost in Space" premise of the show. It also short changes the supporting cast almost as bad as The Original Series did with a crew that isn't as engaging as it should be.

I liked Enterprise. Why does everyone hate it?

I am a science fiction fan not a Star Trek fan so DS9 was the best Trek by a long shot.

Voyager and Enterprise both had some good episodes but the overall premises of both shows were questionable.

The cartoon series was a cartoon and they weren't even the high quality kind I watched as a kid.  I ignore them.

Filmation is synonomouss with cheaply done. I thought they were good. DS9 did a decent job of keeping technobabble down and the characters interesting. TNG was my first show and I do hold a candle for it with most fond memories.
