Neville doesn't go out at night. The one time he does he is trying to commit suicide. The other time he is caught outside when the trap is set for him. Even for this poorly written flick, dark would be a stupid time to go out. He locks himself inside and sleeps in his bathtub with his dog. Presumably he also conducts most of his research and experiments at night when he can't go out.
