I love this book, or at least, I love the idea of this book. It is inarguably beautiful and when left on the coffee table or bar, it is always one of the first things that gets picked up, usually with the guest wanting to mix up a random concoction. Great right? That's what a bar book is for, isn't it? Well, sadly, it usually ends in disappointment. Okay... I confess that I never really thought about the possibility of liquors and mixers being organic, but it does make sense given how many parts of our food chain have been reengineered and rendered. So this was something of an education for me. Personally I consider books on cocktails and spirits as interesting and important as cookbooks themselves. I'm usually a beer and wine person and like an occasional kamikaze or vanilla cranberry but this little gem of a book has some really neat concoctions, organic or not, this is full of great ideas and gorgeous pictures. This is a book you'll use for a planned cocktail party rather than an impromptu cocktail as most cocktails have ingredients that are usually not on hand. Saffron, blue agave nectar, pomegranate juice just to name a few. It also uses the organic version of all fruits and even liquor but you can choose not to use the organic version. I have a number of books on mixing drinks and really do not need another one. But this one caught my eye. When you see the pictures inside you will understand, they are fantastic. It really makes every drink look so much more enticing. I was a little confused on the title, organic drinks? Ok, just another spin on the whole health food craze? I will start off saying that this book is presented very well and many of the full-page color photographs look so good that it will make your mouth water. There are a handful of interesting recipes. The frozen berry bellini caught my eye in particular. It is a mixture of organic berries with champagne, simple syrup, pineapple juice and ice. Don't let the title of this book scare you away! The Organic, Shaken and Stirred Cocktail Book has tons of unique recipes along with gorgeous full color pictures. Most of the ingredients are simple to find either at your local liquor store or available online. The author also suggests many alternatives you can use in recipes if you can't find a "hard to find" ingredient. You don't HAVE to make these cocktails organic or green. The perfect combination of hipster cocktails and modern sensibility. Abercrombie collected a wonderfully tempting selection of beverages sure to tickle tastebuds. He also discussed organic and earth friendly liquors and gives the low-down on tips and tools. I wonder about accessibility for unique liquors in less-than-metropolitan-locales.
