After years of coaching endurance athletes and racing a few myself, I have experimented with many nutritional products for training, racing and recovery. Most endurance athletes - those training and racing in events lasting more than 60 minutes - need to consume nutrition during their events. The typical intake necessary is between 300-500 calories per hour. And one thing I have noted is that whatever the target number is, we typically fall about 20% short of this. You can consume calories through solid foods, semisolids (gels, chews) and liquid. The liquid nutrition is typically in powder form that is added to water.
Liquid nutrition is the most convenient source for athletes who have other things on their minds, namely racing their race. However, some formulas were too chalky, some had electrolyte or sodium deficincies (leading to cramping), some were too "thick" (leading to GI distress) and some jsut tasted bad. It took a lot of years and a lot of experimentation to land on a solution that worked - Infinit Nutrition.
I discovered the Infinit website at the recommendation of several pro triathletes and friends. At first glance at their website - www.infinitnutrition.us - I was struck by how different they were from all other products. Their home page enables you to create your own formula by adjusting the 7 "sliders", varying the calories, caffeine, carb blend, protein, flavor, amino acid blend & electrolyte blend. I created 2 formulas, one for Ironman and ultramarathon distance racing (higher protein blends for increased needs) and one for Half Ironman and shorter (low to no protein content to eliminate GI issues).
On average these blends contain 375 calories, meaning that with one standard water bottle I can knock out 75% of my caloric needs simply by sipping away at a water bottle every 5-10 minutes. It is a lot easier remembering to do this than trying to remember to eat 5 gels or 3 bars or whatever.
I have many clients using Infinit and the only complaint I have ever received is that the product tends to turn after a few hours in the sun. I usually reply that any product turns after a few hours in the sun. I recommend either freezing a bottle the night before so it is ready right when you need it, or having a portion of product measured out, grabbing a water bottle at an aid station and mixing up a fresh batch.
