Favorite Vegetarian Friendly Chain/Fast Food Places

I've been a vegetarian my whole life. I also LOVE food. I like restaurants that give you options, lots of options. If there aren't many options, I prefer that people don't get confused when I ask for my dish without chicken. I also like going to places with my friends where they won't complain about "rabbit food."

Menu photo
Veggie patty, english muffin, gruyere cheese, sprouts, roasted bell peppers, jalapeños, caramelized onions, apricot and balsamic vinaigrette.

Ever since I was young, it has been my dream to eat a huge gourmet burger, fries and a milkshake. Usually, when I go to a burger joint and request a veggie burger, I get an eye roll and it takes 40 minutes to defrost and microwave the tasteless blob of soy. The counter made my dream come true. The vegan veggie burgers are made with a brown rice and wheat base, mixed with cranberries, carrots, black beans, roasted red peppers and spinach. They are soooo delicious. You will never want a Boca burger again.

Pizza Restaurant Chain

Vegetarian with Japanese Eggplant + goat cheese, Key Lime Pie, Dakota Smashed Pea & Barley Soup

I love this place because you can pretty much request anything without the chicken, bacon, or fish it usually comes with. The Neopolitan dough is vegan and so is the Dijon balsamic vinaigrette. You can request the lettuce wraps with vegetables only and make any pizza custom to your liking. Most times, they have let me sub chicken for avocado at no extra cost.

Cheesecake factory
Avocado Egg Rolls and Sweet Corn Tamale cakes, no tomatillo cream sauce, extra pica de gallo

Cheesecake factory's menu is ridiculously intimidating so I don't even bother going past the first page of appetizers. Trust me, the Avocado Egg Rolls with cilantro and sun-dried tomatoes are delicious. Especially the amazing sweet dipping sauce that joins them in their tasty quest to my mouth. They are too good to share. The Tamale corn cakes are to die for and I crave them all the time. They are sweet and creamy and come with a nice side of black beans. I just found out that the Tomatillo cream sauce has chicken broth, which is lame, and probably unnecessary…They also have a great list of salads that can be modified to suite your fancy.

In-N-Out
Grilled Cheese, No onions. Animal Style Fries, Neopolitan Milk Shake

In-N-Out is great, as everyone knows. I remember the first time I went there and heard about the grilled cheese. I ordered it and I fell in love. Everyone says that it taste pretty much the same as a regular cheese burger, just a little less...material. It's fresh and tasty and quick…and it's so good.

Italian bread, Havarti cheese, lettuce, tomato, avocado, pepperchinis, olive spread, light mustard

Safeway(Vons) Deli Sandwiches are, usually, pretty good. Sometimes, depending on the store, they do not make their sandwiches with any sort of effort, but for the most part, they are put together and full of tasty things. They have a variety of different breads and cheeses to choose from as well as avocado, olive spread, and dressings. Plus if you buy 7 sandwiches you get the 8th free! Who says there is no such thing as a free lunch?
6
Baja Fresh
Black beans, rice and cheese quesadilla, extra salsa verde

Baja Fresh in my opinion is great alternative to Chipotle, which is omitted from my list, because every time I eat there I get ill. I think that their black beans taste better and I like their rice better too. Both are animal-product free! Baja Fresh also has a salsa bar, which gives them extra points. The best part might be the very good, filling, veggie fajita burrito. MMmmmm.

Pick Up Stix
Kung Pow Tofu, Cream Cheese WonTons

Stix lets you replace any meat or fish for tofu, so if you're dreaming of orange chicken, you can have orange tofu instead. Pick Up Stix food is prepared fresh to order and it looks to me that they clean the wok every time they make a new order. Not sure about the ingredients in the sauce, so this is something to check out if you feel iffy about animal based stock. It's great, greasy American-Chinese junk food without being overly junky.

Taco Bell
Seven Layer Burrito, no sour cream, extra hot sauce, Fresco Style crunchy taco, beans sub beef.

Taco Bell deserves props. Almost everything I read on the internet is about how honest about their ingredients they are. Their refried beans are vegan, which means that you can pretty much customize anything to your specific needs. The hard taco and soft taco shells are vegan but the burrito tortillas have milk. Their cheeses are kosher and their Mexican rice does not contain any chicken or beef stock. It's easy for me to come to the Bell and mix and match different parts of things and still avoid meat products.
9
McDonald's
Egg McMuffin, no ham, Apple Pie, Sweet Tea

Surprise? Yes, I know, but its true. At 5 AM, after a nice night of drinking and dancing at those crazy LA warehouse parties, an Egg McMuffin is the best thing to replenish my energy and help me survive the long ride home. Yes, I know it's probably cooked on the same griddle as the sausage. After all, you ARE eating at McDonalds. But it is a possibility that some places, especially in LA where Kosher is the law of the land, the kitchen maintains some cleanliness practices. So, fresh cracked egg, cheese, English Muffin, yummy. I hear that their apple pie is vegan too.

PS, did you know that in India, there are some McDonalds that are completely vegetarian?

What did you think of this list?

This is a great list. I'm far from a Vegetarian, so it doens't directly apply to me, but I forwarded it on to my vegitarian wife. Her all time favorite is In-N-Out. I've always found that peculiar, being that its a burger joint. Good to see she's not the only one. And nice tip on the Neapolitan shake. Had no clue about that. That's a great off-menu order.

Awesome list!  With the exception of Veggie Grill and Pick-Up Stix, I've been to the rest of these before and dug 'em.  I'd totally add Chipotle to my list though.  In fact, I might just have to get their veggie bowl for lunch today!  As someone who was veggie for over a decade, I sure can appreciate this list!
