Movie poster
A groundbreaking movie, way ahead of its time. I haven't always appreciated the complexities and depth of this flick but I always seem to catch something new when I watch it now.
The original, Alien, was cool, creepy and unlike anything I'd seen before, but the sequel, Aliens, just blew it all away and set the bar really high for everything that came after it.
Star Wars
This movie redefined 'epic' and 'blockbuster', inspired a generation of people from all walks of life and continues to thrill and inspire kids of all ages today.
Forbidden Planet
Why did this make the list? Lots of reasons. #1 at a time when most scifi at the movies was about the sometimes silly and over the top creature features, this movie treated scifi seriously and delivered a dramatic masterpiece. #2 the sfx were incredible for the time period. #3 Leslie Nielson, best known for his comedic roles later in life, plays it very straight. #4 Watch this movie and tell me it doesn't feel like Star Trek...
The Day the Earth Stood Still
They did a horrible remake of this - AVOID IT. If you want to be truly entertained, check out the original. Sometimes, less is more, and when they have a huge, multi-million dollar budget to play with, they forget the story (see Transformers, too) and the drama.
DVD front
This movie would be perfect, absolutely perfect, if they'd never made any sequels. Alas, they did. But the original still holds up well as a mind blowing cinematic extravaganza.
5th Element
Not everyone loves this flick and that's sad. I think it's an amazing story, I like the retro feel of some of the sfx, the mix of comedy, action, drama and music. It reminds me of an epic novel which is unusual and difficult to pull off on the big screen.
Blade Runner (The Director's Cut) (1982)
I saw this without any previous knowledge of Philip K. Dick's 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep'. It was different, creepy, deep and made me think. The visuals stick with me to this day. It was also the first time that I could remember seeing a bleak future (having grown up on Star Trek and not yet having seen Mad Max). The multiple versions, director's cuts, extended cuts and whatnot all can get a little tiresome, though. Kinda like all the endless cuts of Highlander 2...
Poster for the movie
I remember seeing this movie at the drive-in. My older brother didn't want to pay for me so he made me get in the trunk and sneak in. It was fantastic. Again, it had the right mix of action, humor, drama and music (Huey Lewis!). I think it holds up really well today.

What did you think of this list?

Sorry, but I disagree on the greatness of 2001, and I'm a huge sci-fi nerdie. I just think the film is garbage. Sure, intellectual garbage, but if a duck's a duck ... blah blah blah. THE FIFTH ELEMENT was too juvenile for me, and ETERNAL SUNSHINE just was a mess. Otherwise, solid list. Love that you acknowledged FORBIDDEN PLANET and THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL b/c I think a lotta folks really overlook classic science fiction, and that's sad. BLADE RUNNER is tops, in my book, and CHILDREN OF MEN could deserve some attention that it'll maybe get with the passage of time.

Back to the Future! :D And I've yet to see the original The Day The Earth Stood Still, but I hear it's so much more amazing than the remake, so I definitely have to see it. By the way, ditto on what @ said because I'd love to hear your thoughts on these. Thanks for sharing!

I might quibble with the order of these ten movies, but I can't easily argue with these movies being amongst the 10 best out there.
