Coachella is this week, Sasquatch is around the corner and many of these bands will be playing at one or both of those music festivals. If you slept on any of these artists or albums that debuted in 2009/2010, it's not too late to redeem yourself. Make sure you're musically current by picking up these albums just in time for the Spring/Summer concert series we have to look forward to - iTunes is just a click away, right? You don't want to be the only one in the dark during those hipster water cooler chats, do you?
The duo, Joshua Carter and Sarah Barthel busted on to the scene with the super funky electro-pop album Eyelid Movies released on Barsuk Records in February of 2010. Their beats may be influenced by Indie pop & synth rhythms, but there is definitely an underlying hip-hop influence as well. Pay special attention to tracks 'When I'm Small' and 'Mouthful of Diamonds' their very first music video which can be seen on Pitchfork.
It's a shame that you missed the free download of The notorious xx off of the Wait What website. Unfortunate because "The Man" made this aspiring new mashup talent remove it, but not before a half million people got a chance to hear the brilliance of the Notorious B.I.G's vocals over the highly acclaimed debut album of The xx. If you do a little online digging, I'm sure you can come up with a song or two. Or eleven.
Jack Penate has been a pop musician for years now, but it wasn't until August of 2009 that he debuted an album stateside with the release of Everything is Newreinventing himself with a new soulful sound. The single and accompanying music video for Pull My Heart Away is a prime example of this new breed of indie-soul.
The xx came on to the scene like a spider monkey and slapped us all in the face with their melodic shoegaze vibration. The threesome hails from West London and are the new cool kids on the block drawing up comparisons to the modern day Portishead because of their soft angelic sound and synth beats.
Carney, a quartet from Los Angeles is one of the newest bands to sign to Interscope and might very well be the next great "classic" rock band. These boys have an undeniably sexy sound, they have a "look" that says they were born to do this and put on one hell of a stage performance. You can see for yourself HERE.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that it doesn't matter what kind of music you like, this album transcends the typical "folk genre" it has been categorized in. Simply put, this album is for everyone.
Alison Sudol is the singer-songwriter, pianist and frontwoman for the band, A Fine Frenzy. Born in Seattle she grew up in grunge but managed to find a sound all her own that is both strong and melodic. Over the last two years the band has had much success commerical and otherwise; an impressive touring schedule has placed them alongside The Stooges and Rufus Wainwright, and their song 'Almost Lover' garnered Billboard chart recognition. The release of their second album Bomb in a Birdcage on Virgin Records late last year is further evidence that this band is here to stay.
For those people who are too young to have lived through the height of Motown (like myself), Mayer Hawthorne & The County brings old school soul music mixed with a little bit of hip-hop to the masses with their album 'A Strange Arrangement' that was released late last Summer.
Bon Iver (pronounced bon i-VAIR) is a group of gents who understand the true meaning of "overnight success." Still touring and basking in the glow of their debut release in 2008, For Emma, Forever Ago, Bon Iver has received critical aclaim from rock journalist and their peers in a very short amount of time. If you need any more convincing just take a look at their laundry list of accolades, including making NPR's list of The Decade's 50 Most Important Recordings for For Emma, Forever Ago.
With anywhere from nine to sixteen members up on stage at any given time, Broken Social Scene would be lobbed into the category of Baroque Pop, a term that seemingly was invented just to describe them. They have been around since 2001, but with the release of their newest record Forgiveness Rock Record it seems that the best is ahead for this band.
