My 5 favorite things to smell in a beer

  • Mar 19, 2010
Smell is such an integral part of taste....you taste first with your olfactory sense, then with your taste. Here are the 5 things I love smelling in a freshly poured beer.
1
Coffee
I am a big fan of stouts and porters, and so often they have great coffee notes in the bouquet. (Especially Schlafly's Coffee Stout!)
2
Chocolate
Dark chocolate, milk chocolate, cocoa powder, tootsie rolls....if it's chocolate, I love picking it up in the nose of some beer I've never tried. It usually means I am about to have one happy palate! (New Belgium's Fat Tire amber ale has great subtle chocolate notes.)
3
Grapefruit
I enjoy a grapefruit half now and then with breakfast, but I really enjoy getting a nice hoppy IPA or other brew that has a juicy grapefruit nose (due quite often to the use of Cascade hops). I pick up hints of slightly sweetened grapefruit in a beer's nose, and I know I'm going to most likely really enjoy the experience. (Rogue's Captain Sig's Northwestern Ale has a good grapefruit-y nose.)
4
Plum
Dark plummy fruit notes in a nose usually mean good things are ahead for my palate. (Buckbean Brewing Company's Black Noddy Lager merges dark plummy fruit notes well with coffee and chocolate notes.)

Mmmmm, I love the scent of coffee and chocolate in my beers, too!  I don't think I've ever really distinctly smelled the other ones, but I'll try to pay a little more attention during happy hour tonight :P  Thanks for this list and your recommendations, Scott! :)

Look for the ones I mentioned specifically in the list too and really get your nose in the glass :D
