People who frequently read my reviews know that I am quite partial to my home state of Louisiana. I always try to give as much positive feedback about my beloved Pelican State as I can. Living in southwestern Louisiana close to the Texas border and being married to a native Texan, though, has given me a big dose of appreciation for the Lone Star State as well.
One of the things that I appreciate most about Texas is the Spoetzl Brewery in Shiner, TX. Spoetzl is best known for their Shiner Bock, a lovely dark amber brew that is smooth and very tasty. They offer a number of other beers as well.
I recently discovered their Shiner Ruby Redbird, a seasonal light amber lager that is perfect for summers in the South.
This beer features a biting one-two punch of grapefruit and ginger. In my opinion, the grapefruit's citrus tang dominates, but I've talked with other people who believe that the ginger is the stand out flavor.
It has to be served very cold, as its tartness gets stronger as it warms up. Luckily for me, I don't have much of a problem drinking Ruby Redbird quickly and haven't tasted it when it was too warm that often.
Overall, I really like this Shiner seasonal brew. It's refreshing, has a nice bite, and goes down with a kick.
