The Beer Snob
Turning up our noses at inferior beers

A decent sweet lager that's quite repeatable!

Sleeman is a local Canadian micro-brewery (well ... local to me anyway!) made good and grown to mass-producing adult proportions! And while I like the cachet and snob appeal of drinking good quality products from little known micro-breweries, I also admit that I'm proud of the growth that this local company has achieved. And, if I may say so myself, the growth hasn't diminished the quality of their honey brown lager. While it's not a brew that stands out head and shoulders above the competition, it certainly isn't a bad tipple for a lager that's now mass produced.

It pours a beautiful deep gold with a relatively thick tan head that has modest staying power. Even without the name on the can, the sweetness is quite obvious in the aroma. Carbonation is only moderate and it doesn't have particularly strong staying power. Unfortunately, this lager has a tendency to flatness if you're a sipper as opposed to a chugger.

The predominant taste is the sweetness (now there's a surprise!) - some honey, some caramel and even a hint of maple. The hops and the malt are nicely balanced and there's just the right amount of bitterness. Some reviews that I read complained of a metallic flavour but I certainly didn't notice anything ... even though the sample I purchased today was from a can.

So many beers and so little time! While I'm still trying lots of different beers, this is certainly one that I wouldn't hesitate to repeat or offer to company over a meat dinner or a summer barbecue.

About this beer

Wiki

From Sleeman.com:

Smooth Sleeman Honey Brown Lager is brewed in the tradition of cottage breweries at the turn of the century. Some might think the tradition is outdated; we just think we got it right the first time.

5.2% alcohol by volume

Tasting Notes

Our Honey Brown boasts a rich copper with a creamy, off-white foam, creating a full-bodied lager with a touch of natural honey and a slightly sweet finish. The distinctive clover honey notes in this fine brew accent the aromas of toasted grain and caramel.
