Raging Bitch Belgian Style IPA -- more Belgian ale than true IPA

  • Jan 23, 2011

How does it look? How's the color? Clarity? Head?

  • Dark amber, clear, very little head.

How's the nose (smell)? Sweet, spicy, fruity?

  • Though an IPA the overwhelming scent is fruity

How does it taste? Malty? Hoppy? Fruity? Chalky?

  • The main flavor is the spicy sweetness associated with wheat beers.  It takes about a minute after finishing a mouthful before the bitterness from the hops kicks in.

Is it full-bodied? Medium bodied? Weak? Clean?

  • Full bodied and not clean -- no IPA regardless of modifiers is 'clean'

Where did you buy it? How much was it?

  • Birmingham AL, $10 six pack bottles

What do you think overall? Would you buy it again?

  • "Two inflammatory wild drink.  Nectar imprisoned in a bottle. blah blah blah wallow in its golden glow blah blah blah unleashed, untamed, unbridled -- in heat --" Flying Dog Brewery is not known for subtlety in any way, but someone really should have taken the marker away from the insane guy that named then tried to describe this beer.  It is an IPA, but since it is "Belgian" style, the perfumery aspect of the Belgian ales is the strongest component.  It takes quite a long time for the bitterness to come through all the spicy sweetness.  It is denser and heavier than ales tend to run, much closer to a stout in that respect.  It's ok and I bought it because I like the brewery.  But since I am not a big fan of Belgian style ales, it isn't something I will buy again.  However, for people who do like the Belgian style, I'm pretty sure this will be worth the cost.

I name and describe everything and classify most things. If 'it' already had a name, the one I just gave it is better.
