Terrapin Brown IPA -- what happened to the taste?

  • Mar 17, 2011

How does it look? How's the color? Clarity? Head?

  • Pours very dark brown with a mild head

How's the nose (smell)? Sweet, spicy, fruity?

  • It does not have a strong nose but what there is is largely of a malty sweetness.

How does it taste? Malty? Hoppy? Fruity? Chalky?

  • It starts out with a weak brown ale sweetness then an underwhelming IPA hoppiness then it fades to ...

Is it full-bodied? Medium bodied? Weak? Clean?

  • To quote Mrs Slocoumb from "Are You Being Served?" Weak as water!

Where did you buy it? How much was it?

  • Birmingham AL, $11 for 6-pack bottles

What do you think overall? Would you buy it again?

  • Simply put, no.  There isn't enough taste to justify half the price.  But let's see what the bottle claims it has.  It "is a head on collision between a hoppy west coast India Pale Ale and a malty, complex brown ale.  Brewed with 5 varieties of hops and 7 different malts, this hybrid style represents the best of both worlds."
I'm not a big fan of brown ales, they are too sweet.  But I expected that my tongue would be pretty much beaten to a pulp with 12 flavor ingredients all vying for attention.  Instead, the battle either took place outside the vat, or the ingredients were so weak their deaths left not even a hint of their existence.  At best, 6 of the malts just folded and the 7th fought only enough to leave a hint of it behind in the smell.  Four of the hops ran off if they bothered to show up in the first place and the last one standing is unremarkable in all respects.  Given how weak the taste, I'm left thinking that the very dark brown liquid is somehow just a trick of light or someone has succeeded in making brown food coloring that has very little taste.

Great write-up, Paul! I'm sorry you spent so much without getting much enjoyment out of it but, thanks for saving the rest of us some money.
