Turning up our noses at inferior beers

Snake Dog IPA -- a "go-to" ale for IPA fans

  • Nov 21, 2010

How does it look? How's the color? Clarity? Head?

  • Dark amber in color, clear, very little head

How's the nose (smell)? Sweet, spicy, fruity?

  • Strange given the strength of all the flavors, there is almost no scent at all and what is there is a sort of citrus sweet

How does it taste? Malty? Hoppy? Fruity? Chalky?

  • Very hoppy but there is enough malt sweetness that doesn't balance out the experience so much as just adds a cheering section for the bitterness that defines this category of beer.

Is it full-bodied? Medium bodied? Weak? Clean?

  • Full bodied.  The finish lasts a long time and stays consistently bitter which is the major plus.  The one drawback to the beer is in the finish.  It must be served very cold or it tends to get a filmy aftertaste/aftertextrure (it has the same taste and feel as egg-albumin)

Where did you buy it? How much was it?

  • Birmingham AL, $10 six pack bottles.

What do you think overall? Would you buy it again?

  • This is the marketing shtick on the bottle: "Tired of those annoying 3AM hang-up calls from your crazy, stalking EX? Turns out the same qualities that make your EX so damned annoying make our Snake Dog IPA so attractive.  Chock full of bitterness, bite and attitude, it slaps you in the face with flavor.  Just like your psycho EX did at the bar last weekend.

I have no idea just what sort of EX the marketing team collectively suffered from, but the truly relevant info in the rant is absolutely true: it will smack you in the face.  There is nothing subtle about this beer and since that is not one of its goals I can say that it passes muster on all fronts (except the one problem with the filminess if not consumed at optimum temps).

Yes, I will buy this beer again!

LOL...I like the marketing shtick on the bottle! I'm going to have to add this to my list to try, thanks for sharing!

I name and describe everything and classify most things. If 'it' already had a name, the one I just gave it is better.
