A book by Larry Flynt

There's a lot more politics than sex in Flynt's provocative polemic against conservatism in general and the Bush administration in particular—which just goes to show how exercised theHustlerentrepreneur is by current policies and trends. The first … see full wiki

Bringing out the gossip

If you ever wanted to get the lowdown on George W. Bush and the Republican Right, this is the book for you. Larry Flynt lays out his opinions on various social and political issues such as prostitution, pornography, taxes, free trade, and the Clintons in this direct and witty book. Written as part autobiography and part propaganda piece, this book serves up lots of facts, gossip, and opinion about elected and non-elected members of the Republic Right that Mr. Flynt has come across personally and politically over his lifetime.

The book starts with his childhood in rural Appalachia. Then came military service where Mr. Flynt was decorated in two different branches of the military! Then back to the outwoods he returned where he discovered the money-making potential of sex. This naturally leads to the history of Hustler, and Mr. Flynt's runin with the modern Right's first great hustler, Mr. Charles Keating, of the Savings & Loans scandal. The latter leads a series of efforts at the local, state and federal level to crimp down on the sale, transport, and public display of pornographic material. Flynt responds by filing lawsuit after lawsuit, usually bankrolled entirely by him. Eventually Keating himself is taken down by his own greed.

Next comes Jerry Falwell. Flynt parodies the Reverend in an issue of Hustler. The ensuing lawsuite goes to the US Supreme Court where Falwell loses. This is followed by encounters with other moralizers and legislators. But Flynt focuses his ire on the Clinton - Lewinsky scandal. Here Flynt proceeds to describe the marital infidelities he discovers of numerous Republicans in the wake of the Clinton impeachment proceedings. The best story is one that he only hints at; evidence of a certain Republican governor of Texas who paid for his girlfriend to have an abortion when it was still illegal under US law. Boy the gossip in this book!

Overall a good book.
