Richard Branson, the philanthropist

It really impresses me when people of wealth, fame and stature use all of that to make a positive contribution towards society and the environment. Nobody really asks them to, but they do it out of their own good will. Such is the case with Richard Branson.

Even looking through his reading list, it's quite impressive to note the number of politically and environmentally-charged books that he seems quite fond of. I wasn't all that surprised to see that Branson ranks Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" as one of his favourite, considering it was such a well publicised bestseller, but it was quite interesting to see that he also lists James Lovelock's "Revenge of Gaia" along side it. From his infloox page, I see that there is a somewhat limited list of his top faves, including the British writer, Jung Chang, best known for her biography on Mao. I'd love to see some more, especially if there are some books on his list relating to social change.

About this person

Sir Richard Charles Nicholas Branson (born 18 July 1950) is an English industrialist, best known for his Virgin brand of over 360 companies. Branson's first successful business venture was at age 16, when he published a magazine called Student. He then set up an audio record mail-order business in 1970. In 1972, he opened a chain of record stores, Virgin Records, later known as Virgin Megastores and rebranded after a management buyout as Zavvi in late 2007.

With his flamboyant and competitive style, Branson's Virgin brand grew rapidly during the 1980s—as he set up Virgin Atlantic Airways and expanded the Virgin Records music label. Richard Branson is the 261st richest person according to Forbes' 2009 list of billionaires, with an estimated net worth of approximately £1.5 billion (US$2.5 billion).[2]
