Still very personal...

I go into phases in my "internet life" when I go nuts and sign up for a membership to everything on the internet.  10 blogs, 10 new "email me when there are new sales," anything and eveything that looks interesting.

So when I was introduced to LinkedIn, obviously I joined.  I wasn't quite sure what it was, so let me break it down for you.
  • You sign up and create a profile with your info... pretty standard for most of these sites.
  • You add your resume since this is more of a professional networking website.
  • Add your previous job experiences and duties, schools, etc.
  • Add friends as you would on Facebook.
  • Search for jobs, or employers can search for potential employees.
The cool thing about this is that you can click on any job posting, and then see who has posted the opening, and see if you are in any way "linked in" to that person. 

Also, you can write recommendations for those you have worked with, or bosses can write recs for you. It's a good thing to have as a lot of employers prefer people with recommendations.

So my personal experience with this:

I found a few job postings that sounded interesting... so I decided what the hey and just shot my CV and cover letter over. Usually with sites like these, you'll never hear back other than the "Thank you for applying. Due to the large volume of applications, we cannot respond to each one individually.  We will contact you if you are a right fit. Thanks and good luck."

Well, I'm not sure if  it was because it was in the beginning stages of the site, but I received ACTUAL responses with 2 out of the 3 I had sent resumes too! AND, you could also tell they were actually sitting on the end typing you a response, instead of sending an automated email.

Either way, I'm liking the site. The last time I logged in, it still wasn't anything like Monster (where you have about 3 million responses for any search).  You get less responses, which is good because most of those postings are legit, but the down side is there aren't as many options.

Give this site a shot, you're more likely to get a response than from any other job posting site (that I've tried anyways). There's really nothing to lose ... that's what I say everytime I sign up for something online....

I've a few friends who are true professionals in their own field on the site. It is a site for serious people looking for all kinds of opportunities & contacts are here mainly in their professionals capacity. Linkedin has its own niche market. A good site and not too much "noise". I like it.

one of the things that constantly bug me about linkedin is that everytime you want to change something/write something you have to "log in" again - even though you are logged in - I guess it's to confirm the changes but it really bugs me...

LinkedIn  is a business-oriented social networking site founded in December 2002 and launched in May 2003[1] mainly used for professional networking.

The purpose of the site is to allow registered users to maintain a list of contact details of people they know and trust in business. The people in the list are called Connections. Users can invite anyone (whether a site user or not) to become a connection.

This list of connections can then be used in a number of ways:

  • A contact network is built up consisting of their direct connections, the connections of each of their connections (termed second degree connections) and also the connections of second degree connections (termed third degree connections). This can be used to gain an introduction to someone you wish to know through a mutual, trusted contact.
  • It can then be used to find jobs, people and business opportunities recommended by someone in one's contact network.
  • Employers can list jobs and search for potential candidates.
  • Job seekers can review the profile of hiring managers and discover which of their existing contacts can introduce them.
